Because of this she thought it was deeply unfair that Felix  \nClenchmarten’s first words to her, upon him regaining consciousness, were:“Why have you kidnapped me?”  \n“I haven’t kidnapped you,” she said.  \nFelix looked at his ankles, bound together with duct tape. He raised his wrists which were also bound.  \nFelix sat on the floor of the deep end of the empty indoor swimming pool. He looked quite ridiculous, sitting there in his sharp grey suit and floral tie, a bloody mark in the fringe of his blond hair where he had hit his head.  \nThe Nuttyland pool had been closed for repairs after a series of leaks in the piping and an outbreak of black mould in the female changing rooms. That had been fifteen summers ago, and when the efforts to fix, renovate and re-open had dried up, the Nuttyland manager had locked the place up for good. The happy theme park-goers either had to go find another swimming pool or – if they were especially hardy souls – actually go swimming at Skegness beach, which was just over the sand dunes outside the fairground complex.  \nThe windows of the pool were covered with peeling translucent plastic, all blues and greens, so that on sunny days the place would glow like the  \nCaribbean Sea. There was no sun this morning. The skylights above had overgrown with moss and barely let in any light. The place was dank and dark, even in daylight.  \nCoral had started using the swimming pool as storage maybe three months earlier, when she realised that the rest of the Nuttyland fairgroundsite was no longer a safe place for many items of sentimental value. Her dad’s old office had been a bit of a mini-museum to Nuttyland’s long history, and she’d brought framed photos, old bill posters, and some old painted signs from the nineteen twenties over here for safe keeping. She’d added two of the surviving Wondernuts the Squirrel mascot costumes, oneof the painted backdrops from the old coconut shy, and even a bow and arrow and air pistols from the shooting ranges. She held one of the air pistols now as she stood before Felix.
