Ten degrees by forty degrees off port, 100 yards out!” \nThe shout came from the crow’s nest ofThe Black Wind, where the sharp-eyed lookout had been vigilantly searching the surrounding asteroid field for the past ten minutes. Captain Daster Thona had steered the fine spelljamming vessel into the asteroid field for the purposes of finding Red Tom, the elusive blood-eyed nether crockill known to haunt this area. Finding Red Tom wasn’t just about the sizable bounty on the predator’s head; the astral elf captain had a personal vendetta against all crockills. He hoped today he would be adding another crockill horn to his collection. \n“Steady, Mr. Weatherly,” Captain Daster spoke to The Black Wind’s helmsman, a capable but still green human of barely twenty years.“Red Tom likes to come up from behind an asteroid. Angle it in close over to that big one and let’s see if we can’t lure it out.” Mr. Weatherly nodded without saying a word and spun the steering wheel, bringing the sleek spelljamming ship closer to a large floating rock. \nThen they all saw it. Red Tom was a star beast, a creature of immense size and appetite who preyed on spelljamming ships in this region. It resembled a bulky, scarlet-scaled crocodile, but it had twelve sets of stubby legs each with a broad webbed foot that it used to move quickly through Wildspace. Its dark, nearly black hide was riddled with scars from countless encounters, and its eyes shone like blood diamonds. Captain Daster knew the ferocity of a crockill firsthand, and Red Tom looked to be particularly aggressive. The great beast’s tail was as deadly as its snapping jaws, but the savvy astral elf captain knew Red Tom’s weak spot – the underside of the creature’s tongue. Getting it to show the tongue was another matter, however. \n“Brace for impact!” Captain Daster shouted as Red Tom lunged forward with an angry roar. It was upon The Black Wind in a moment, its massive reptilian body curling around the ship and squeezing. Wood splintered as the ship’screw started attacking the webbed claws gripping the sides in an effort to dislodge the star beast and get it to show its teeth. Captain Daster knew it wasn’t going to be easy. \nThe vastness of Wildspace and the Astral Sea hides a multitude of secrets, both dangerous and benign. One of the strangest is the existence of massive monsters known collectively as star beasts. They vary in temperament, capabilities, and even general shape and features, but overall they are enormous on a scale that threatens life and safety in a wide area. \nThankfully, star beasts are rare encountersin most stellar systems. They tend to avoid smaller creatures in favor of targets closer to their size, and the most readily available targets of sufficient size are the spelljamming ships sailing the starry seas between planets, moons, and systems.
