Named after Phileas Fogg’s valet Jean Passepartout in Jules Verne’s novel Around the World in Eighty Days, our newsletter is your passport to the world of international education at the college. \nInt ern ati on al Fun Fa ct s \nLONGEST PLACENAME \nWith 85 letters Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu, a hill in New Zealand, has the longest place name. Named after Tamatea a famous warrior, the name translated to English means \"the place where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains, known as 'land-eater’, played his flute to his loved one.\" \nTHE COLOR PURPLE IN FLAGS \nOnly two flags in the world use the color purple. Nicaragua's flag (left) features a rainbow in the center triangle which includes a purple band. Dominica's flag (right) features a sisserou parrot with \npurple feathers. \nWELCOME, SLOAN MCHUGH! \nWe are very pleased to welcome Sloan McHugh as our Program Assistant for the Office of International Education. \nShe has a bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration from Carroll University. During her undergraduate career, she studied abroad in England at the University of Hull. Previous to coming to Harper College, she spent 5 years working in Outdoor Education and Recreation in East Troy, Wisconsin. \nShe has been traveling internationally from the young age of 2, which sparked her passion for seeing and learning about other cultures. She is excited to take that passion to encourage others to do the same and grow as global citizens. \nShe is located in the Office of International Education, L229 . Stop by and say hi! \nFaculty-Led Programs for 2020 \nSpanish Language Immersion Program-Mexico \nThe Intensive Spanish program in Cuernavaca, Mexico is a great way to learn about Mexico’s culture and is designed as a true immersion experience in the language. Cuernavaca, known as the city of Eternal Spring, is located an hour south of Mexico City. Different from many cities in Mexico, Cuernavaca is a city that receives people from all parts of the world to learn Spanish and for that reason, its citizens encourage their students to use Spanish as the language of communication, which promotes an authentic learning experience outside the classroom. \nA unique feature of this program is that it will offer courses (SPA 112 and 113) in Spanish language for heritage speakers. As Harper is in the process of becoming a Hispanic-serving institution, many of our Latino students, who were brought to the U.S. at young ages, benefit from these courses to strengthen their language skills and cultural knowledge. The intention of. this program is to help some of our students to learn more about their heritage. \nHonors HUM 115: Cuba \nAn intensive and unique course which combines on-campus classroom meetings with a field component to Cuba. Students will begin their study of Cuba though assigned readings from different books and pertinent substantive materials. The discussion boards on Blackboard will delve into both the assigned readings and the field trip to three distinctive and fascinating Cuban cities: Havana, Santa Clara, and Viñales. During their stay in Cuba, students will witness first hand the intersection of the history, culture, geography, economics, politics, and environmental issues Cuba has faced and continues to evolve as it transitions into the modern era. The course will enable students to understand both the uniqueness of Cuba and its place in the international landscape. \n~~ ~~ UPCOMING EVENTS ~~ ~~ \nWEDNESDAY, MARCH 4TH // 6 : 00PM // BUILDING J THEATRE (J135) // FREE \nNdere Cultural Troupe is coming back! \nJoin the dynmanic Ndere Troupe as they perform authentic Ugandan dances and songs accompanied by indigenous percuss","cbCaiuEE1UgPEX9f","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiuEE1UgPEX9f","pdf",959600,"English","# International Fun Facts\n## Longest placename\n## Flags featuring purple\n# Staff Welcome\n## Welcome, Sloan McHugh!\n# Faculty-Led Programs for 2020\n## Spanish Language Immersion Program - Mexico\n## Honors HUM 115: Cuba\n# Upcoming Events\n## Ndere Cultural Troupe performance\n## New Office opening reception\n## Earth Week photo exhibit\n## Study abroad program proposal deadlines","[{\"question\":\"Who is welcomed in the Spring/Summer 2020 PASSEPARTOUT newsletter?\",\"answer\":\"The newsletter welcomes Sloan McHugh as Program Assistant for the Office of International Education.\"},{\"question\":\"What is the focus of the Spanish Language Immersion Program in Mexico?\",\"answer\":\"It is an intensive Spanish program in Cuernavaca designed as a true immersion experience that also offers courses for heritage speakers.\"},{\"question\":\"What are the key details for the Earth Week photo exhibit?\",\"answer\":\"Harper students, faculty, and staff can submit up to five photos in color or black and white by April 14, following the people/animal/buildings-in-our-environment theme, with required information on the back of each photo.\"}]","Spring - Summer 2020 - PASSEPARTOUT Office of International Education Newsletter | PDF",1790866590]
