These state-requiredtests serve as one important way to understand how well students are learning grade‑level skills inEnglish, mathematics, and science. \nDepending on their grade level, your child will participate in one or more of the following tests: \n# ● New Jersey Student Learning Assessments – Adaptive ( NJSLA‑A) for ELA and Mathematics\n\n● New Jersey Student Learning Assessments – Science ( NJSLA‑S) \nAll of New Jersey’s statewide assessments are based on the New Jersey Student Learning Standards( NJSLS) , which describe what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. While thestate test may look a little different this year, it still measures whether students are learning skills andknowledge expected for their grade. \n# Little Silver Testing Schedule\n\n\n| Assessment | Test Administration Dates |\n| --- | --- |\n| NJSLA-A ELA and Mathematics -Grades 3 through 8 | Mathematics - May 18 , 2026ELA - Reading - May 19 , 2026ELA - Writing - May 20 , 2026 |\n| NJSLA-Science - Grades 5 and 8 | Science - May 21-22 , 2026 |\n\n# Purpose of Statewide Assessments\n\nStudents take different kinds of tests during the school year, and each type of test serves a distinctpurpose. New Jersey’s statewide assessments are one important way to show families andcommunities how well students, schools, and districts are meeting the New Jersey Student LearningStandards, which describe what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. \nThese results provide schools with valuable insight into students’progress and help educators refineinstruction when needed to strengthen learning. They allow teachers and school leaders to see howstudents grow from year to year, and to ensure all students have access to strong, grade‑levelinstruction. This information also helps districts confirm their curriculum matches the state standards.Overall, statewide tests give families and schools an understanding of how students are growing andwhere support may be needed so every child can succeed. \n# About the ELA and Math Tests ( NJSLA‑A)\n\nThis spring, for the first time, statewide tests in English and math ( NJSLA‑A) will becomputer‑adaptive. As your child answers questions, the test adjusts in real time. If a question isanswered correctly, the next one may be slightly more challenging. If your child struggles, the test mayprovide a question that is less difficult. This helps the assessment “zero in”on your child’sunderstanding more precisely. \nEvery student receives a different mix of questions, but all questions are reviewed together tomeasure the same grade-level standards and skills. Adaptive tests do not change what students areexpected to know; they simply help measure those skills more accurately. \nThe NJSLA-A consists of three (3) units: ELA-Reading, ELA-Writing, and Mathematics.Unit Testing Times (NJSLA‑A) \n\n| Unit | Session 1 TestingTime (minutes) | Session 2 TestingTime (minutes) | Total Test Time(minutes) |\n| --- | --- | --- | --- |\n| ELA-Reading | 75 | 75 | 150 |\n| ELA-Writing | 90 | N/A | 90 |\n| Mathematics | 75 | 75 | 150 |\n\n# About the Science Test ( NJSLA‑S)\n\nThe science assessment is a fixed‑form test, meaning all students receive the same questions. Whilethe test will now appear in the same online platform as the ELA and math assessments, the formatand content remain the same as last year. \nUnit Testing Times (NJSLA – Science) \n\n| Science GradeLevel | Units (totalnumber) | Testing Time perUnit (minutes) | Total Test Time(minutes) |\n| --- | --- | --- | --- |\n| Grades 5 and 8 | 4 | 45 | 180 |\n\n# Testing the Test\n\nIn order to ensure a smooth transition to this new type of test, students in grades 4–12 took part in afield test for the adaptive ELA and math assessments in fall 2025.
