In manyways, they have shaped not \nonly my career, but the person I have become. I have been extremely fortunate to build alife around dogs, fieldsports and the countryside, but I have never taken that for granted. Every opportunity I have had has come from years of hard work, from people who have supported me along the way, and from a deep respect for the traditions and responsibilities that come with our sport. \nFor me, the gundog has always sat at the heart of it all. Long before the judging appointments, the competition wins, the articles, the training days or the videos, there was simply a young lad with a dog, trying to understand how to get the best out of it. In truth, that is still the part I love most. A good gundog teaches you patience, timing, discipline and humility. They expose your mistakes very quickly, but they also reward fairness, consistency and feel in a way very few things in life can. \nWhether you are standing on a peg, walking behind a spaniel, picking-up at the end of a long day, or quietly training a young dog in afield on your own, the relationship between handler and dog is what draws so many of us back. It is not just about performance. It is about trust, partnership and understanding. That connection is one of the most powerful parts of our world, and I believe it has never been more important. \nWe all know that fieldsports face challenges. There is more scrutiny than ever before, and there are many people outside our community who either do not understand what we do, have no strong opinion, or only see a very small part of the picture. We cannot ignore that. The future of shooting will not be protected by being defensive or by assuming people should simply understand us. It \nPHOTOGRAPH: SARAH FARNSWORTH \nwill be protected by standards, education, responsibility and by showing the very best of what our community represents. \nThat is where I believe gundogs have such an important role to play. A well-trained dog can open a conversation in a way that shooting alone sometimes cannot. People may have mixed viewson fieldsports, but most people can recognise the bond between a handler and a dog. They can admire the control, the kindness, the teamwork and the purpose. A gundog gives people a way into our world that feels honest, natural and relatable. \nOver the years, I have trained dogs and worked with people from all walks of life, from complete beginners to experienced shots. Again and again, I have seen how a dog can change someone’s understanding. A dog encourages people to learn properly. It teaches them to slow down, to read the countryside, to respect game, to think about timing, and to appreciate the work that goes on long before \nand long after a shoot day. In that sense, gundogs are not just part of fieldsports. They are one of the strongest foundations beneath it. \nAs a community, we should be proud of what we do, but we must also be thoughtful about how we represent it. We have a responsibility to welcome new people in, to support the next generation, to maintain high standards and to show that shooting is rooted in conservation, respect, discipline and community. If we can do that, then I believe there is still avery positive future ahead. \nThat is the tone I hope this issue refle","cbCairrjclLPCxGD","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCairrjclLPCxGD","pdf",49865224,108,"English","# News\n## Guest editor interview\n## Featured equipment and kit\n# Gear guide\n## Gundog transport solutions\n## Retail therapy\n# Stalking\n## A career in pursuit of deer\n# Clay shooting\n## Results from the TopGun event\n# On test!\n## Beretta AX800 Suprema\n# Proper game handling\n## Ensuring supply to supermarkets ahead of a new season\n# Events and competitions\n## Jack Pyke Open\n## Orston Masters\n## Charity Clay Shoot","[{\"question\":\"What theme does the guest editor highlight in the foreword?\",\"answer\":\"The guest editor emphasizes gundogs as central to the sport, focusing on trust, partnership, and responsible representation as fieldsports face increasing scrutiny.\"},{\"question\":\"Which items are featured as part of the issue’s equipment and gear coverage?\",\"answer\":\"The issue includes a gear guide with Gundog transport solutions, a retail therapy kit collection, and a guest editor’s gun spotlight, alongside other shooting enthusiast gear.\"},{\"question\":\"What is the main focus of the “On test!” section?\",\"answer\":\"The “On test!” section reviews the Beretta AX800 Suprema, presenting a test of the new semi-auto shotgun.\"}]","Sporting Gun - August 2026 | PDF",166]
