The issue highlights Saint Augustine’s teaching on holy virginity, tracing its scriptural foundations and its development through early Christian writers. It addresses controversies around virginity and marriage, outlines Augustine’s intent to praise virginity while warning virgins toward humility, and introduces a framework of spiritual exemplars rooted in God, the soul, and material CELESTE,S.M. \nIn the Pentecostal springtime of contemporary Christianity, ourminds are more and more attuned to the wonder of new discoveriesof life in the Church.Along with emphasis on the sanctity ofmarriage in Christ and with the flowering of new states of Chris-tian holiness such as the secular institutes, there has also been, especially in the years since Pius XII wrote his encyclical Sacravirginitas,a renewed stress on the mission of the religious Sisterin the Church and on the meaning and excellence of her consecra-tion.At the same time, just as in the spring, there is a deepeningof roots,a return to the sources. We are re-discovering the pro-found riches of those wellsprings of Christian thought:SacredScripture, liturgy, and the Fathers of the Church. \nPerhaps there is no Father of the Church whose teaching onChristian virginity seems so “ever ancient, ever new”as the greatAfrican bishop of Hippo. With the unerring clarity and precisionof the wise man guided by divine light,Saint Augustine drankdeeply of the purest fountains of truth. In Scripture,he found thecounsels of Christ recorded by the Synoptics and interpreted bySaint Paul and Saint John, which throw into strong relief theeminence of virginity without in any way depreciating the valueand beauty of marriage. Before his time, this tradition in the earlyChurch had already been molded by writers such as Saint Justin,Tertullian,Origen,Saint Methodius,Saint Cyprian, and the authorof the Clementine epistle.Saint Augustine’s personal experienceof Manicheism, too, guided him to emphasize the positive aspectsof virginity in its relation to the Christian life:for by their hereticaldualism the Manichees had condemned marriage as evil and en-couraged the practice of“continence”only as a means of avoidingthe procreation of children. At the end of the fourth century, therenegade monk Jovinian had raised a controversy concerning, among other things, the relative merits of virginity and marriage, and had denied the perpetual virginity of Mary. When Jovinianmoved to Milan with his confreres after a papal condemnation, \n4
