It traces faith from God’s revelation through Abraham, Moses, the prophets, and the Bible, then explains how divine word precedes prayer, worship, self-scrutiny, and action examen. the supernatural character of the Christianreligion. Our faith is based not on human constructions but onwhat God has chosen to tell us.Faith began with God's wordspoken to Abraham:“Go out from your land and your kinsfoldand your father's house, into the land which I will show you.”God's word of revelation continued through Moses and the prophetsand was gradually written down in the books of the Bible.Thebook of Ezekiel, for example, begins with:\"The word of the Lordcame unto Ezekiel.\"In the New Testament\"the word of theLord came unto John the son of Zachary in the desert.\"Andfinally,\"God,who at sundry times and in divers manners spokein times past to our fathers through the prophets, last of all inthese days has spoken to us through his Son”(Heb.1:1).Theteaching of the Church is based wholly on the word of God.Thethings we believe, the worship we offer, the actions demanded ofus by our Christian commitment transcend the native powers ofman. What we know as Christians we know only because Godhas told us;what we do we do because he strengthens us.Thewhole of the Christian life, and therefore of the religious life, isthe result of God's gracious condescension. Our minds are raisedabove their natural powers by his revealed word;our wills areraised above their natural powers by his love,\"the Holy Spiritwho has been given to us.\" \nIt is true,of course, that all of our spiritual exercises in thereligious life have their specific character from the supernaturalityof our faith. But spiritual reading most of all has its whole reasonfor existence in the supernatural.Prayer and worship and self-scrutiny can be conceived of as natural to man,and in some pos-sible world where there might have been no revelation, but onlya religion built by human reason, these practices might haveexisted. But spiritual reading is the product of Christianity's unique \ncharacter as a religion based on what God has said and done atcertain moments in history. That is what gives spiritual readingits importance in the daily routine of the religious life.In onesense it is the first and most
