Religious and the Church\n\nSISTER MARY VIRGINIA,C.S.J. \nThe religious life takes its inspiration from an historical figure—Jesus of Nazareth, whose words and deeds are recorded for us inthe evangelical accounts we know as the Gospels—and in the desireof each one of us to express her love for the person Christ byliving as he did and for the reasons he did.To understand thisrelationship is most certainly no small thing;to make it the vitaland prevailing motive in our lives is undoubtedly to have achievedsanctity. As Father Gleason emphasizes in To Live Is Christ,reli-gious life since the time of the Scribes and Pharisees has faced thegrave danger of becoming in practice,if not in theory,merely\"following the rules”;but it is in fact nothing if not“the followingof Christ in Christ.\"Unless it is a life rooted in a personal relation-ship with the God-Man revealed in the Gospels,it is no life at all,for love, not legalism,is its meaning,as it certainly is its source. The three vows, community life, and apostolic commitment havetheir origins not in canonical code but in the Gospels themselvesand in our personal desire to love Christ by sharing with him hisevangelical life of divine Sonship. The religious life is a witnessingto this spirit of Christ's divine Sonship;each of its familiar ele-ments—the vows, common life, and community apostolate—express-es an essential virtue of a child of God:“undivided love of theFather, unlimited trust, unconditional submission”and togetherwith these,“a completely fraternal life with a desire to love allmen as Jesus loves them, and to give ourselves unceasingly forthem,\"following the example he has set us in the Gospels.1 \nMany other theologians teach this same thing, that the reli-gious life means what the Gospels themselves mean, not a lifeand a love of rules, but the life and the love of Christ. \nBut if a proper understanding of the religious life depends sobasically on our awareness of its evangelical origins,it is inevitablethat in seeking to plumb its depths we be drawn to a closer study \n1 Carpentier,René,S.J.Lif","cbCaihQRBcG46k2x","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaihQRBcG46k2x","pdf",1657917,"English","# The
