friendships may doboth to the community and to the unfortunate souls caught inthese ugly attachments.But are we therefore obliged to condemnall friendship in the religious life?  \nSurely,the power for good of a holy friendship is greaterthan the power for evil of a false and selfish one.And it oughtto follow that the best protection any community can have againstthe danger of bad friendships is the vigorous existence of goodones.In spite of what Saint Francis de Sales may say,I think thisis what he actually found to be true.For example,in one house,gone slack,only five Sisters would pay any heed to the holybishop's appeals.But these five stuck together and stuck to theirguns,and finally,I believe with the saint’s blessing,walked outof their incorrigible old community to found a new one.Theymust have been five pretty firm friends.  \nThe fact is that the community gains unity from good friend-ships,gains a strength both natural and divine.That mere naturecan serve the community in this way should be clear from theexample of family life.In a family with many children,is it amenace to the life of the whole household if one brother or sisteris especially fond of another?Or even if parents,without unfairnessto the others,are especially attached to a particular child?It issimply unreasonable to expect that affection between various mem-bers of a family will be unfailingly equal in strength and quality.There is a natural order in our affections;there must be,if afamily is to be normal.  \nNow a large religious house brings together individuals dif-ferent in age,temperament,talents,intelligence and—let this notbe overlooked—in degree of spiritual progress.If it be affectionwe are thinking of,then every one of them must make a duty ofsisterly affection towards all,loving everybody else as a member  \nof the same family in Christ.This is an absolute necessity,anobligation not to be escaped;and nothing whatever must be al-lowed to impede or diminish
