A.SCHLECK,C.S.C. \nIf we were to examine Sacred Scripture to determine the natureof a divine vocation to follow Christ,I believe we would come tothe following conclusion:a divine vocation to follow Christ is acall to be a witness to and a herald of the Jerusalem-event whichwe call the paschal mystery. These two elements, witness andherald, are not always found in the same proportion,or withthe same visibility in all who are called by God;but they arealways present in varying degrees in everyone who receives a divinecall.Because of their importance it would be well for us to con-sider each of these elements separately. \nAS HERALDS.As a herald of the Jerusalem-event one who isspecially called by God has a mission to disseminate the kerygma, the good news of man's salvation in and through Christ. This, aswe know, centered more on a person, the Person of our Lord, thanon a doctrine or a cult. The early apostles in their own wayattempted to nourish their own faith and to communicate it toothers, almost by way of contagion rather than by using anyformal proof or logical demonstration.Their aim was to elicit fromtheir associates a response of faith, which was more than just anintellectual assent to some truth of faith. It was a surrender whichthey were after,a surrender which reached to the deepest depthsof their persons, such that from that time on their allegiance wouldbe quickly evident to all who would live with them.As heraldsthey were obliged to some form of proclamation of the Gospel. This aspect of the nature of a divine vocation is best illustratedin the person of Paul.He considered the proclamation of theJerusalem-event,of Jesus as the Lord of history,as not merely aprivilage but an obligation,a necessary service and true ministry. He considered it almost as a special gift which God gave him forothers, instructing them in the things of Christ.\"Woe is me if Ipreach not the gospel”(1 Cor.9:16).Moreover,it was in hispreaching of the Gospel,in his being a herald of it,that Paul \nhimself became ever more fully aware of its deep and profo","cbCaifS4JJybLBgy","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaifS4JJybLBgy","pdf",1243446,36,"English","# The Biblical
