The lead article by Sister M. Judith Tate argues that vernacular participation in the Divine Office requires sustained, practical work and personal research into new prayer possibilities. It frames maturity as intuitive, other-centered vision and energetic, knowledgeable love, contrasting it with prayer infantilism, including monologue, self-seeing, and self-focused religiosity, and explains how growth depends on genuine dialogue and Maturity Through the Office \nSISTER M.JUDITH TATE,O.S.B. \nGray is never so gray as when framed with white. \nPerhaps community prayer life has never appeared so graylydull as now when it is juxtaposed to the brilliant changes takingplace in the liturgy.Among the changes, the conversion to thevernacular and the shift from a relatively modern specified prayerformula to the Divine Office rank most dramatic. \nThis opening of new doors, however, may be misjudged bySisters as a simple door-closing on prayer problems.Would thatsuch a panacea were so simply achieved! If only scholars couldcomb historic tomes, draw up a constitution, list rules, and mailconvents a book that would, presto!rocket Sisters into the unitivestage of prayer. But no.It is a matter of obstinate fact that, toachieve the ideal of praying the Office in the vernacular and torelate that ideal to one’s personal life in a meaningful way requiresplain work. And the first step in the work program is to re-searchnew prayer possibilities being opened up currently. \nSince infantilism in prayer might be called an occupationaldisease among Catholics, since the Divine Office presents the bestmeans of evolving maturity in prayer, since the Sister has a uniqueobligation both to herself and to society to become mature and topray maturely,it might be well to begin the re-search by inves-tigating the possibility of personal maturity in the prayer of theDivine Office. \nWhat,exactly,constitutes maturity? It includes intuitive,other-centered vision and energetic, knowledgeable loving.Therelevancy of the Divine Office to growth in personal maturity canbetter be seen by first considering the evolvement from infantilismto maturity on a psychological level and then by drawing an analogyto such evolvement in prayer. \nOne of the most characteristic traits of infantilism,discover-able in infant behavior,is the
