As—the highest inover a decade-there is much tobe proud of.  \nBut as headlines rightfully cel-ebrate these achievements,it'sworth remembering this:SPMopens many doors but itis not theonly road to a meaningful life.  \nTo those who didn't get asmany As as they'd hoped,yourjourney is just getting started.  \nAccording to the EducationMinistry,1,789 candidates —about 0.5 per cent of the studentswho sat for SPM 2024—did notpass.  \nBut this is not the end of theroad.An exam reflects a momentin time-not the totality of yourpotential and certainly not yourworth:  \nI say this from experience.  \nSeveral decades ago.I enrolledin an engineering programme ata local university because every-  \nMOHD  \nZAIDI  \nMD ZABRI  \none else seemed to be doing it.  \nUnsurprisingly,it didn't takelong before the cracks started toshow.I struggled to connect withthe study material and lecturesbegan to feel more like back-ground noise than inspiration.My grades slipped and my inter-est vanished.  \nAnd eventually,so did I-of-ficially dismissed from the pro-gramme.I felt like my life hadderailed.  \nBut as life often proves,failureisn’t always the end.Sometimes,it's the beginning of a betterroute.  \nI decided to start over.M SPM  \nresults were modest—mostly  \ncredits,with two As—but they a  \nand perseverance in pursuit of nic programmes,digital skills de-  \nwere enough to get me started.  \nlong-term goals.  \nvelopment,entrepreneurship,creative fields-all of these arelegitimate and valuable.  \nI enrolled in a diploma pro-gramme,the first step in alongerjourney that eventually led to adegree,a Master's and,ultimate-ly,a PhD.  \nIn her landmark 2007 studypublished in the Journal of Per-sonality and Social Psychology,she found that grit-more thanIQ,exam scores or raw talent—was the strongest predictor ofsuccess across diverse settings,from Ivy League undergraduatesto West Point military cadets.  \nSome students may thrive inconventional academic settings.Others may shine through hands-on work,innovation or businessventures.We need all of them.  \nIt wasn't a straight path.  \nMy peers were graduating,building careers and movingahead while I was finding myfooting and figuring out who 1was meant to become.  \nThe paper,which has sincebeen cited over 11,000 times inacademic literature,showed thatthose who kept going-espe-cially when things got difficult—were the ones most likely to suc-ceed.  \nIn hindsight,that was exactlywhat I needed.  \nIt gave me time to figure outwhat truly mattered.  \nThat winding path eventuallyled me to where I am today:aneducator in Islamic economicsand finance,a field I now con-sidera calling.  \nIn today's world,where changeis constant and challenges aremany,that kind of perseverancematters more than ever.  \nYes,SPM is important.It opensdoors.It signals discipline andpotential.  \nIt wasn't the most direct routebut it taught me patience,re-silience and the quiet determi-nation to keep going.  \nBut it is not the only road to afulfilling future.Nor is it the onlyway to define your worth.  \nIt's also why the concept of gritresonates so strongly.  \nProfessor Dr Angela Duck-worth,a
