Lord in the sermon on the mount. \nThis incisive statement forms the theme for this issue of SL,an important theme because it expresses the basic christian approachto the throbbing, vital, material world in which we live.Poor inspirit.Living in the present_moment of salvation history with aloving and joyful trust in the Lord;living with a healthy respect forthe goods of the world, but without a slavish dependence on them;living with the keen realization that we are on a pilgrimage, travelerstoward a magnificent destiny. \nChristian poverty of spirit is fundamentally just what the phraseimplies —something of the spirit,a life-philosophy,a true weltan-schauung which places the material world in its proper perspective. The Lord is not counseling penury or an abject poverty, but he isadvising a definite freedom of heart wherein we can rise above thematerial goods of life, handle them properly, and then put them at theservice of our neighbors. As St.Augustine said,“A man's povertyis judged not by the contents of his coffers, but by the dispositionsof his heart.” \nIn the same sermon on the mount the Lord later asks for a deepand abiding trust in God.“So do not worry;do not say,'What arewe to eat? What are we to drink? How are we to be clothed?’Itis the pagans who set their hearts on all these things.Your heaven-ly Father knows you need them all.Set your hearts on his kingdomfirst, and on his righteousness, and all these other things will begiven you as well.\"The Lord,of course,is not suggesting that weshould retire from life and then mindlessly feel that somehow Godwill provide all we need.We must work, labor, sweat—but with anunshakable belief that the Lord will help us,if we are trusting,joy-ful,even light-hearted about the vast array of good things in thisgood world. \nThere are present today in the United States two major cur-rents of thought about some aspects of our material society:theall-pervasive spirit of aquisitiveness which is heralded as a vital partof our affluent society;and the growing consciousness of our obliga-tion to help alleviate the misery and indigency of so many of ourcontemporaries. The latter is a genuine and authentic christian im-pulse,while the former is often diametrical","cbCaideSO52MygLL","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaideSO52MygLL","pdf",2928179,72,"English","# Editorial\n## Poverty of Spirit\n## The Poor of God
