Louise Gross, chairman of the Women’s Committee for Modification of the Volstead Act, addressing National Prohibition before international audiences in 1927. She challenges claims that women favor Prohibition, argues from public referendums and observed drinking increases among youth, and contrasts U.S. conditions before World War I with later outcomes. The speech emphasizes temperance successes under local option, criticizes extremist “paid Drys” and profitable anti-liquor organizers, and warns other countries against adopting National Prohibition.",{"@graph":14,"@context":73},[15,34,56],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/religion-spirituality/","Religion & Spirituality",3,{"item":32,"name":10,"@type":21,"position":33},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/speech-delivered-national-prohibition/322183/",4,{"url":32,"name":10,"@type":35,"image":36,"author":41,"headline":10,"publisher":44,"fileFormat":47,"inLanguage":8,"description":12,"dateModified":48,"datePublished":49,"encodingFormat":47,"isAccessibleForFree":50,"interactionStatistic":51},"DigitalDocument",{"url":37,"@type":38,"width":39,"height":40},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/speech-delivered-national-prohibition/322183.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":42,"@type":43},"Jiven","Person",{"url":19,"name":45,"@type":46},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-08","2026-09-21",true,{"@type":52,"interactionType":53,"userInteractionCount":55},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":54},"ViewAction",8,{"@type":57,"mainEntity":58},"FAQPage",[59,65,69],{"name":60,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":62},"Who delivered the speech and in what role?","Question",{"text":63,"@type":64},"M. States, with a warning to other countries not to adoptNational Prohibition if you wish real Temperence. \nBy(Miss)M.Louise Gross,Chairman of the Women's Committee for Modifcation of the Volstead Act,of New York State. \nLadies and Gentlemen: \nIt is a very great pleasure and a privilege to be permitted to discuss thesubject of National Prohibition with you and I wish to take this opportunityto congratulate the pcople who show interest enough in this highly controversial subject to take the trouble to come and hear what a citizen of the UnitedStates has to say about itAnd the fact that I am a woman and opposed toProhibition makes the situation all the more terrible for me because our Dryopponents are always proclaiming loudly that the women particularly favorprohibition. This false statement is just like the majority of their other claims,as the public Referendums taken in various States of the Union prove thatthe women are just as much opposed to Prohibition as the men are and inmany cases more so on account of the increase in drinking among the veryyoung people from 14 years and up. \nHARRISON PRINT SHOP \nHARR18ON,NEW YORK \nTo begin with I am going to state briefly the alcoholic drinking situationin America just previous to the World War and I think the same conditionsprevailed in practically all the other countries engaged in this war.In 1912and 1913 Temperance was an assured success in the United States.LocalOption(which is a local law voted on by the people of a given locality, eitherVillage,Town,City or County)was in effect all over the country.Thepeople of any given place that wanted prohibition had it thru their own voteand those who did not want it in their particular section voted against it andevery one was satisfied because each had their own individual say in the law.In 1914 the death rate from poisoned alcohol was the lowest it ever had been \nin the history of our country which statistics are on file in the office of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co.of America with branches in every Town and Cityin the United States who send in weekly reports to the Home Ofice in NewYork City on the death rate all over the country so that no figures are moreaccurate than these, and the deaths from alcohol in 1914 were lower thanthey ever were before. The country
