Core vocabulary consists of words like 'want,' 'go,' 'help,' 'stop,' 'like,' 'more,' and others that can be used across many situations. \nWhat symbols / words are on a Core Board? \nCore words are highly useful words that are used frequently. They can be used across lots of different situations. They include: \n● verbs e.g. want, like, stop \n● adjectives e.g. different big \n● pronouns e.g. I, you, it, they \n● questions e.g. who, what, where \n● concepts e.g. more, again, not \nFringe words are relevant to a specific topic or situation and tend to include a lot of nouns. They are meaningful words but are used in limited contexts. \nThis is a core board with core words and fringe words for watching television. These can be combined in the following ways: \n● Request: ‘watch tv more’‘want remote’‘help’ \n● Reject: ‘not watch tv’ \n● Describe: ‘programme sad’‘not funny’ \n● Give information: ‘programme finish’ \n● Ask a questions: ‘want different programme?’‘see remote?’ \n● Get attention: ‘wow look!’ \nLeaflet No: cssl0028 v1 \nreview date 7/27 \npage 1 of 3 \nTop Tips! \nDo \n● Model using the boards without expectation. \n● Say the word as you point to it. \n● Comment on the child’s play, pointing to the symbols on the board as you do this. \n● If the child points to a symbol, say the word they are pointing to, and do what it says straight away e.g. , if they point to 'bubbles', you should say 'bubbles' and blow the bubbles again. \n● Bring core boards into daily activities that are relevant to the child and their environment. \n● Interpret and honour all forms of communication. If the child pushes the toy away, say 'finished'while pointing to the 'finished' symbol. \nDon’t \n● Don’t worry if the child doesn’t look, just keep modelling. \n● Don’t take the child’s hand to the board or ask them to point. \n● Don’t ask lots of questions or test the child e.g. ,‘where’s the car picture?’. Model pointing to the car ● Don’t worry if you make a mistake. \nRemember \n● Remember that children need to learn what symbols mean, especially core words that are difficult to represent with a symbol e.g.‘more, again’. \n● Using core boards is not an activity, they should be used alongside activities or play. \n● Model, model, model! \nVideo Resources \nACE Centre-how to model a simple communication board whilst playing with bubbles: \n[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJ1pEMbHmug](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJ1pEMbHmug) \nACE Centre-how to model a board with more symbols whilst playing with bubbles: \nBubbles symbol chart (20 symbols) -YouTube \nACE Centre – how to model a more complex board whilst doing an arts and craft activity: \n[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruheJZnnKyQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruheJZnnKyQ) \nACE Centre – how to expand language using a communication board \n[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaAx4zSOESg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaAx4zSOESg) \nBarnsley AAC – examples of modelling (using core board from 2:05) \nModel model model-YouTube \nLeaflet No: cssl0028 v1 review date 7/27 page 2 of 3 \nIf you have any comments about this leaflet or the service you have received you can contact : \nChildren’s Therapy Services \nSpeech and Language Therapy \nPrincess Royal Community Health Centre \nTelephone: 01484 344299 \n[www.cht.nhs.uk](www.cht.nhs.uk) \nIf you would like this information in another format or language contact the above. \nPotřebujete-li tyto informace v jiném formátu nebo jazyce, \nobraťte se prosím na výše uvedené oddělení \nJeżeli są Państwo zainteresowani otrzymaniem tych \ninformacji w innym formacie lub wersji językowej, \nprosimy skontaktować się z nami, korzystając z ww. \ndanych kontaktow","cbCaimNKvVpTniF9","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaimNKvVpTniF9","pdf",288298,"English","# What are Core Boards?\n## What symbols / words are on a Core Board?\n## Top Tips\n## Video Resources\n## Contact Information","[{\"question\":\"What is a Core Board and who uses it?\",\"answer\":\"A Core Board is a communication tool that shows high-frequency core vocabulary in a structured layout.
