translations of Spanish poemsdealing with the universal theme of love in its various aspects maycause those who do not know the Spanish language to become inter-ested in Spanish poetry and the people who speak Spanish.  \nIn my translations I have attempted to reproduce the ideas andimagery expressed in the original poems as accurately as possible.Afreer translation might be more artistic,but it would present theideas and emotions of the translator instead of those of the poet.Ihave also attempted to employ the original verse form with as fewmodifications as possible.I have used approximately the same num-ber of syllables in each line as in the Spanish,in most cases.Itseemed advisable to substitute the English metrical feet of two orthree syllables with a regularly recurring stress for the Spanish versebased on a definite number of syllables in a line with only one fixedstress in a short line and two or three in a long line.Assonance isfrequently employed in Spanish poetry,with the even lines through-out the poem having the same final accented vowel and the samefollowing unaccented vowel,as in aiming,scraping,hailing.Asassonance is not effective in English,I have substituted English con-sonantal rhyme,as aiming,blaming,taming,where the consonantsalso agree,changing it for each stanza.In other cases I have em-ployed blank verse,which is frequent in Spanish.In short,I haveattempted
