the moon?It sounds crazy, butwe use many products that were made for the spaceprogram. We use these products everywhere fromour homes to hospitals, firehouses, and airports. \nScientists from the National Aeronautics andSpace Administration(NASA)develop productsto help astronauts while they are in space.Theseproducts help astronauts live in space,do their jobsbetter, and protect themselves from danger.Manyof these products have made their way into generaluse. How did that happen?Read on. \n# Space Products at Homeand in the Skies\n\nTake a good look around your home. Can you tellwhich things came from products first used in space? You might be surprised at the things that wereinvented for astronauts. \nAstronauts on lunar missions have had to drill asmany as ten feet down into the moon's crust to getsamples of dirt and rock.Since there is no source ofelectricity on the Moon,a battery-powered cordlessdrill was created for this job.The drill had to bepowerful and lightweight. \nIn the years following the moon missions, cordlesspower tools have become common in homes \nthroughout the world.Today we clean our carpetswith cordless vacuum cleaners, blow leaves and grasscuttings using cordless blowers, and install screwsor drill holes in wood using cordless screwdriversand drills. Many families use cordless toothbrushes, shavers, and hair clippers. \nIn the 1970s,NASA teamed up with an electronicscompany, and together, they developed a smoke-and-fire detector for the Skylab space station.Withthis invention, astronauts on the space station couldbe alerted quickly to dangerous smoke and fire.Nowit is a law in most states to have smoke detectors inevery new home to help keep people safe. \nFire and smoke
