moving towardmaturity is the ability to distinguish betweenillusion and reality.At five or six,daytimedreams acted out in playing cowboy or firemando a necessary work in building imagination.At fourteen,over algebra homework,daydream-ing of being the century's brilliant rocket de-signer(at least)are tolerable,as thousands ofteachers and parents will attest.But everyoneadmits there.comes a time when all are ex-pected to put away the things of a child.  \nAnd most do.By teen age,toys have beenwilled to small cousins,dreams of being bestengineer on the Sante Fe line have slipped outalmost unnoticed.Education comes not so muchby rote as by reason,a thinking out is exactedby the unfolding complexities of learning—that success can be failure,for example,or thatthe common need not be ordinary.Such thingsare true;they are part of reality.  \n★  \nDISCIPLINE and penance—\"this is reality,\"the Holy Father said in a Lenten talk,“Without discipline one is not a man,and with-out penance one is not a Christian.\"In oneform or another this statement of truth is madeeveryday in school or at home.It's simple tosee that discipline—say,the rule about no talk-ing in the corridors between classes—is neces-sary for order both in a society and in anindividual.No one recognizes as a\"man,\"meaning as a mature person,the fellow whogoes around picking fights,or drives his carlike a frantic mouse in a maze;neither he northe society which does its part in producinghim is considered well-ordered.  \nDiscipline and penance are more at home inthe language of the Christian than cheesebur-ger-and-fries will ever be.These past weeksespecially we have heard them and said themand surely tried them.If ignition doesn't comeoff,perhaps it is because response to religion isnot strong enough.  \nNobody plans to be a teenager forever;stu-dents attend to a vocation,for instance,evenwhile in school.Neither will the Christian voca-tion wait;adolescence in the Christian life,everyone knows,ended officially with Confirma-tion.But as the Holy Father indicated,it isstill necessary to affirm this,to make a commit-ment to a discipline,to take on the adultresponsibilities
