It examines the underlying aims of these Southern literary and cultural concerns, formed amid growing national materialism and its impact on the South. The discussion also addresses the modern university’s relationship to the writer, questioning whether the writer needs the university and how the institution views literary authorship. SOUTHERN\n\nWRITERS \nin the \nMODERN \nWORLD \nDONALD DAVIDSON \niENI A DOROTHY BLOUNT LAMARMEMORI AL LECT U RES,1957 \n# Southern Writersin theModern World\n\nOne of the most important of the South-ern magazines in the 1920's was TheFugitive,a magazine of verse and briefcommentaries on literature in general.Among its contributors were John CroweRansom,Allen Tate,Robert Penn War-ren,Donald Davidson, and MerrillMoore.Publication began in April 1922and ended in December 1925.Soon there-after,the “Fugitive”writers and someothers became profoundly concernedwith the materialism of American lifeand its effect upon the South. The groupbecame known as“Agrarians.”Theirthinking and discussion culminated in asymposium,I'll Take My Stand,pub-lished in 1930. \nIn his first two lectures Mr.Davidsondescribes the underlying nature and aimsof the Fugitive and Agrarian movements. He brings to the discussion his intimateand thorough knowledge of Southern lifeand letters. \nThe third lecture deals with the placeof the writer in the modern university, posing the questions of whether the writ-er needs the university and whether theuniversity needs or wants the writer. \nThese lectures, delivered at MercerUniversity, were the first of the annualEugenia Dorothy Blount Lamar Me-morial Lectures. \nUNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA PRESSATHENS \nLBRARY \nBETHLEHEM,PA. \nNORTHAMPTONI
