I also explained how 3D printers work, what the different printing materials are, what their properties are and what each is useful for.  \nWoodworkers tend to use 3D printing for 3 main classes of uses   Custom jigs, such as drilling and routing; Custom  \nadapters, such as connecting dust collector ports of different sizes; and configurable organizational systems that expand upon pegboards and French cleats. Printing costs are pretty low, especially compared to having someone else custom-design things for you.  \n3D printers have been around for a while, and new, improved models come out all the time. I explained how 3D printers extrude melted plastic, typically 0.4mm in diameter into 0.2mm thick layers that stick to each other. Software, called a Slicer, converts a 3D design into layers, with tunable options, trading off aesthetics, structural strength, density of the prints, and generation of support structures during printing. An entire 0.2mm layer is printed before moving up to the next layer. The materials typically come in 1 kg spools of 1.75mm diameter filament. If there are multiple colors/materials in a layer, then the printer needs to switch between each of those colors/materials to complete the layer. There are printers that handle multiple rolls of filament at the same time, typically of different colors and/or different materials. Most printers have a single \"hot-end\" extruder that has to purge its current material before swapping to a new filament. Some newer printers have multiple hot-ends that are swapped into the single motorized gantry that moves the hot-end across the printing plate.  \nThe printing process is fairly stable, allowing a print, which may take hours to complete, to proceed unattended, even overnight. Some printers have a camera and AI software that can detect printing anomalies and halt the printer so that you can intervene and/or abort the process.  \nSeveral websites exist for downloading (or uploading!) things to print. Some of these websites offer many, many, free contributed items. Some of the better items are for sale. The software for designing in 3D ranges from free to very expensive.
