Theology \nMARTIN SEMPLE \nOne of the weaknesses of Catholic spirituality has certainly been itsattitude toward purity.Purity was very often presented as nothing morethan a non-sexual attitude towards life,a denial or a repression of sexual-ity.Purity is truly chastity. It involves a healthy outlook on sexualityand life.Very often the image was projected that chastity was somethingthat was achievable only in the single state, and particularly in the reli-gious state through the vow of chastity. \nFortunately the emphasis is changing today. The Theological Dic-tionary of Rahner and Vorgrimler says,\"In present day theology chastityrefers to properly ordered behavior with regard to sex”(p.76).SeanO′Riordan defines chastity as“a positive moral moderation and regulationof sexuality”(New Catholic Encyclopoedia).Chastity is fundamentallyintegrating our sexuality in a human way—it is the true integration ortrue humanization of sex.O′Riordan rightly points out that even todaychastity is often befogged under a fear of sexuality. \nIt is interesting to reflect that Saint Thomas spent one whole sectionof the Summa pointing out that chastity is not one of the cardinal virtues;in fact,he dealt with it under the virtue of temperance—the regulationof the natural appetites. If we truly understand what the word\"natural\"means,we have a key to a true understanding of the attitude of moraltheology with regard to the virtue of chastity.Though Saint Thomasis not always particularly enlightened in dealing with the area of sex,he did locate it within a much wider framework than many earlier the-ologians.One of the weaknesses of traditional Catholic moral theologyis that very often it isolated sexuality from the total picture of man andcame up with directives that distorted possibilities for development. \nThis article is not concerned with the rationale for consecrated vir-ginity or the vow of chastity;it presumes the importance of such a voca-tion in the life of the Church. It is concerned with the virtue of chastitywhich underlies the living out of a vowed life of chastity. This articlewill trace the history of some of the moral positions of the Church onsexuality(Part I);it will look at some modern emphases in Catholic moraltheology(Part II);","cbCaipUnqEgASjYz","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaipUnqEgASjYz","pdf",2937890,76,"English","# Chastity and
