He had wounded it, almost  \ncinematically, by not understanding the first rule of hunting; you don’t  \nthrow your axe. His father had cried out, angry, but was less so the moment he saw the rattlesnake in the dirt, writhing and twisting.  \nIt wasn’t dead yet, so his father took the axe from the ground and handed it to Sean.  \n“Cut off the head,” he had said.“Cut off the head and the body will die”  \nLater that evening, walking into the kitchen on his toes, Sean had rummaged for the head of the snake in a trash bag. He had poked it, opened its mouth, and attempted to remove its eyes from its sockets. He had made it talkin an act of puppetry while snickering at his own jokes. The snake’s head had a comforting weight to it. He squeezed and stroked it, a giddiness quelling that began in his stomach. When he saw candlelight flicker from the edge of his vision and the soft call of his mother’s voice, he dropped the snake head and ran back to his room. He stood breathless, his fingers furling to recall the feeling of the scales.  \nHunting with his father had become a bonding exercise. By adolescence, he had killed big and small, had skinned black bears, and was quite skilful with his father’s Jaeger action rifle. He had mapped out every area that had surrounded his parents’ small cabin home. The clearing where the pair hunted  \nwas large and dense with Yellowwood and Red Spruce trees.
