Depending on budget, this loving restraint could be elaborate steampunk machinery or wooden chairs with rope bindings. The boys are fixed in one position to begin but, as the play unfolds, this‘apparatus of cruel kindness’ is upgraded, allowing them to sit/stand and lie down. They may eventually be able to swing, slide and see-saw around the equipment; while still bound hand and foot to it. \nThey are suffering the ‘fluey symptoms’ of drug withdrawal. (Some of their dialogue is stylised to sound like moans and groans.) \nDarkness. \nANDY and DARREN: Born. Born. \nLights up. \nANDY: When were you born? \nDARREN: 28th February, 1988 . \nANDY: Bonnie. Blithe. It was a Sunday. Where were you born? \nDARREN: Canterbury: where the tale begins. No, Glastonbury: where the story starts. Hang on. Was it Stonehenge, or Penge? Olympia or Mount Olympus? Where does it look like I come from? \nANDY: You must remember exactly. We need to know if we’re dealing with comedy or tragedy. Morecambe, Bognor, Torquay; born there and you’ll be laughing. Dunblane, Hungerford, Enniskillen; it’s going to end in tears. \nDARREN: Penge. It began here. \nANDY: Actually, it’s Annerley, isn’t it? Where Puff the magic dragon lives. \nDARREN: Andy, invoking Puff right now will not help us get our lives in order. Blew my first breath on a Sunday, I was that pure. \nANDY: Not a blow, bro; it was a roar. What time were you born? \nDARREN: Ten to midnight. \nANDY: If you’d come ten minutes later? \nDARREN: I would have been a pumpkin. \nANDY: Push. Harder. \nDARREN: It hurts. \nANDY: What is your earliest memory? \nDARREN: The see-saw in the park; bright red and yellow. You at the other end, with woolly hat and mittens on elastic. Weeeee! \nANDY: What happened? \nDARREN: I went too high. You were bigger. We weren’t balanced. \nANDY: Wasn’t my fault you fell off. \nDARREN: The see-saw smacked down on my head. Red and yellow puddles of blood and brain fluid. \nANDY: It was bogies, not brain. You were snotty. \nDARREN: Head cracked open, so everybody could see the hole in my soul. \nANDY: We mustn’t get sucked in. Think about something else. What was in the pockets of your anorak? \nDARREN: I can’t remember that. \nANDY: Channel it. \nPause. \nDARREN: ‘Chewits’. There were sweets in my pockets, that day. Smarties, sherbet, chocolate buttons. \nANDY: Oh shit. \nDARREN: They’ll make me feel better. Can I pop a sweetie? A blue one. \nANDY: That’s dangerous. \nDARREN: It will stop me crying. Or a snort of the sherbet, a fizzy sniff. \nANDY: Let’s change the subject. What do you remember about your first day at school? \nDARREN: The smell of sick and sawdust. \nANDY: More. \nDARREN: Teachers the size of skyscrapers. \nANDY: Give me more. \nDARREN: Stickle-bricks. Play Doh. Squished together till the bricks didn’t stickle anymore; and Miss had to work it out with a pencil. \nANDY: No. You’re making it up, now. \nDARREN: It’s a story I’ve told before. That means it really happened. \nANDY: Tell me who you played with at playtime. \nDARREN: William. Smelled of wee-wee. David. Think he’s dead now. \nANDY: Don’t go there. \nDARREN: I never played with the girls, then. All I pulled was their hair. \nPause. \nANDY: What was your favourite subject at school? \nDARREN: Science. Experiments. Explosions. Chemistry. Substances. \nANDY: Forget that. \nDARREN: It will stop me crying. I could kill for a nuclear reaction, right now; a blue one, with a silver lining, and blackness at its core. \nANDY: You’ll never be let back in the lab, man. What was your least favourite subject at school? \nPause. \nANDY: Darren? \nPause. \nANDY: Daz? I know you hated it.","cbCaibpnQipmzjFB","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaibpnQipmzjFB","pdf",200077,77,"English","# Synopsis\n# Cast List\n# Act One","[{\"question\":\"What situation drives the plot of SONS OF THE MOTHER?\",\"answer\":\"A father ties his two sons in a garage or shed so they can kick a deadly habit, but the drug they call “the mother” proves stronger than love.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the play portray the brothers during withdrawal?\",\"answer\":\"The brothers suffer “fluey symptoms” of withdrawal, with dialogue stylized to sound like moans and groans while the restraint setup is upgraded.\"},{\"question\":\"What memories do the brothers use to cope with their pain?\",\"answer\":\"They recall early memories and school experiences—playground seesaws and swings, the smell of sick and sawdust, teachers, and book lines—attempting to change the subject and steady themselves.\"}]","SONS OF THE MOTHER | PDF",119]
