(in1973),this is a description of a gig from hell.A showcase for a record company thatgoes all wrong, where they don't like you and pelt you with rotten fruit, and you justwant to crawl away.I was lucky as this never actually happened to me,but it's one ofmy recurring nightmares. When we wrote it,it was a marriage of a great musical ideathe circus theme -and my slightly depressing Iyric. It came out as a strangelyuplifting record however and was my first hit.The US band,Three Dog Night, had atop 5 hit with it in the States, but they had changed the chorus to \"We Must Let TheShow Go On\".The original lyrics meant exactly the opposite. \nONE MAN BAND-Before my career started I was a graphic artist and used to play \nSTORIES BEHIND THE SONGS-LEO SAYER \nWHEN I NEED YOU -In 1976,I went to Los Angeles to work with producer,RichardPerry. We didn't immediately hit it off.Richard wanted me to concentrate on singingother people's songs and up to that time l'd only recorded my own.I had to findmaterial l could sing as if I'd written the songs and really believed in them.Amazingly,\"When I Need You\"had been turned down by many major artists andproducers when l found it but 1 knew I could make it into a hit.I was in Los Angeleson my own, really missing my ex-wife Janice, who was back in London,so I had noproblem identifying with Carole Bayer-Sager's lyric. The music was written by AlbertHammond. It was my biggest international single and is now considered a standard, having been covered by almost every top artist, from Rod Stewart to Julio lnglesias;LutherVandross to Celine Dion. \nYOU MAKE ME FEEL LIKE DANCING·Again recorded by Richard Perry,\"Dancing\"came out of a jam session in thestudio between takes for another track. What I didn't know, was that Richard had recorded the jam, saying he reallybelieved we'd found a hit groove.I then worked with a writer Richard knew,Vini Poncia,to find a chorus to go with theverse that we already had.Vini turned out to be one of the quickest writers I've ever met and we finished up the song inabout 20 minutes! It was my first US No.1 and No.2 in the UK.It also picked up aGrammy award in the US for best Rhythm and Blues Song in 1977. \nharmonica on the streets with buskers and street musicians in my spare time.In fashionable London in the late
