The opening frames graduation as an uneasy but meaningful moment, arguing that growth is not finished and that the impact of decisions unfolds from many angles. It then transitions into early college preparation through mission-related experiences in Honduras, using personal observations and encounters to shape perspective, memory, and the developing sense of responsibility.","SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN \nSEAN C . All the brilliant things we might have done with our lives if only we suspected we knew how. \n—Ann Patchett, Bel Canto \nMy heart skipped a beat when I first learned that I was delivering the commencement address at my high school graduation. I remember thinking how odd it was for an eighteen-year-old to offer kids his own age, or anyone, advice on how to live their lives. I spent the final few months of my senior year racking my brain for any nuggets of insight to leave behind. \nI found that the problem with reflection was that, in so many facets of life, the journey never seemed complete. Everything I had experienced up to that point was intertwined in this giant, three-dimensional web. An action at one point in space did not just radiate from the center like ripples on the surface of a pond, but it diffused into and out of the plane at an infinite number of angles, altering the way the past was perceived and how the future would unfold, such that the impact of a singular event looked entirely different from each vantage point. And at that juncture in my high school career, I still had no idea what to make of the past four years. High school was a continuation of grade school; college would be a continuation of highschool. There never really was an end. Closure either did not exist or could not be pinpointed because change came and went, and I had established \nnew equilibriums wherever I settled. Nevertheless, after a dozen rounds of writing and rewriting, I eventually committed to a message. \nOn the day of commencement, I stood in front of some four thousand attendees—my classmates, our families and friends—and attempted to articulate our shared high school experience. Though I struggled to pinpoint an area of expertise in my speech, I found solace in the fact that I did not have to impart some profound thesis. I could simply talk about what I had observed over the past four years: how what we labeled meaningful as highschool graduates were not the test scores that we’d achieved nor the awards we’d earned. Instead, this period of our lives would come to be defined by a collection of memories and what they meant to us: early morning practices, spirit weeks, senior pranks, that first beer. The girls we’d kissed and the ones we hadn’t. Missed opportunities and missed curfews. We had established relationships capable of transcending time and space, and that was worth holding onto. \nWatching a recording of that speech years later, I see a younger version of myself wearing an oversized maroon gown decorated with tassels and stoles. I nervously sway behind a podium half my size as the camera shifts focus between my face and the beach balls bouncing in the foreground. I hear a shaky voice describing scenes from my youth, attempting to avoid clichés,","cbCainegtPO8jcBU","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCainegtPO8jcBU","pdf",1901842,3,1,188,"English","en",105,"# Prologue\n# MS1\n## 1.
