Coghill, the late ProfessorW.J.Harvey and Mr J.I.Cronin of the Department of English,Queen'sUniversity, visited Sir Patrick's home at Lydney in Gloucestershire, toinspect the letters and diaries of Edith Somerville and Violet Martin(Somerville and Ross'),of which Sir Patrick is literary executor.Whilethere they had an opportunity of seeing some of Edith Somerville's fineoil paintings and,as a result of this visit,Professor Harvey conceived theidea of devoting a week-end school at Queen's University to the works ofthese celebrated Irish writers, the school to be run in conjunction with anexhibition of some of the paintings and drawings of Dr Edith Somerville.*Plans were already under way when Professor Harvey died suddenly inJune 1967.He had planned to lecture on the novels of Somerville andRoss, among which he particularly esteemed The Real Charlotte.Thosewho are familiar with his fine critical work on nineteenth century andtwentieth century fiction (e.g.The Art of George Eliot,1961 and Characterand The Novel,1965)will have some idea of the warmly appreciativeand finely discriminatory study which would undoubtedly have resulted.English studies generally and this university in particular suffered,in JohnHarvey's death,a most grievous loss. \nPlans for the week-end school went ahead under Mr Cronin's directionand with the generous assistance of the Coghill and Somerville familieswho were unfailingly helpful in lending materials for the exhibition.Paintings and drawings were lent by Sir Patrick Coghill,by his sister,MrsTerence Johnston and by Brigadier D.H.S.Somerville of Drishane House,Castletownshend. The exhibition was arranged by the Visual Arts Groupof the university under the direction of Dr H.J.G.Godin and was declaredopen by Sir Patrick Coghill whose address on the occasion is the first itemwhich follows. \nThe opening lecture on Saturday,16th March, was delivered by Professor \nJ.C.Beckett who took as his title The Anglo-Irish Ascendancy. In thecourse of this lecture,Professor Beckett sketched the origins and develop-ment of the class from which Edith Somerville and Violet Martin sprang. \n*An interesting sequel has been the purchase by the University of a substantial propor-tion of the manuscript material(including the diaries)relating to the life and work ofEdith Somerville and Violet Martin. \nHe showed his familiarity with the works of 'Somerville and Ross'by hismany illustrative references to their writings, particularly the celebrated'R.M.'stories and the fine historical novel,The Big House of Inver.Lectures by Mr J.I.Cronin and Miss H.M.Mitchell followed and theschool concluded with a spirited reading by Mr Liam O’Callaghan of theLyric Players'Theatre of two stories from the Experiences of an Irish R.M.,Lisheen Races,Second Hand'and 'Poisson D'Avril'. \nThe interest shown by those who attended the course and the knowledgeof the works displayed during lively discussions after the various lecturestestified to the abiding popularity of 'Somerville and Ross'.The Queen'sUniversity is happy to have had an opportunity to pay tribute to Ireland'smost celebrated literary partnership. \nE.ESTYN EVANS \nDirector \nInstitute
