The work frames art as an expressive translation between inner experience and shared or uncommon language, using genre intersections as guiding concepts. It positions failure and reinvention as the project’s defining structure, drawing inspiration from personal emotional context and media as a lens for mental health, identity, and representational art.","This thesis has been approved by \nThe Honors Tutorial College and the Department of English \nDr. Ofer Eliaz \nProfessor, Film Studies \nThesis Advisor \nDr. Mary Kate Hurley \nDirector of Studies, English \nBeth Novak \nInterim Dean, Honors Tutorial College \n2 \nSOMEDAY IN PORTLAND \nA Thesis \nPresented to \nThe Honors Tutorial College \nOhio University \nIn Partial Fulfillment \nof the Requirements for Graduation from the Honors Tutorial College with the degree of \nBachelor of Arts in English \nby \nReynard De Spain \nAugust 2025 \n3 \nTo Me*. \nThis is a work ofautofiction. The Concept of a Thesis \nI initially conceived of this project as a collection of short stories (primarily autofiction, leaning fiction) exploring topics that I’ve typically written up until now: body horror, queer and neurodivergent identities, dehumanization, etc. These stories would be woven into a cohesive whole by a tightly-written overarching metaplot with a focus on time loop narratives. \nMy goal with the project, as I originally planned it, was to approach and explore art as representational and expressive, rather than concrete and defined. While the precise categorization and recategorization of different genres, conventions, and areas of study within academic literature are useful within the context of academic literature, my interest as a creatively inclined writer/student has always lain more in human expression through artistic rhetoric. I understand art as a way of interfacing with the world, which involves translating one’s internal experience into a common (or uncommon) language, in order to convey that experience to others. Art can also be a way of translating the external world into a more easily understandable version, used as a learning tool within oneself. My own work has always been very comfortably situated in these spaces of ambiguity and this translation from inner world to cr","cbCaim4HvG4viUIO","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaim4HvG4viUIO","pdf",1008662,3,1,123,"English","en",105,"# Critical Introduction – The Bird and the Pillar of Salt\n## The Concept of a Thesis\n## What Actually Happened\n## Useful Definitions\n## Nonlinear Narrative and Recursive Motion Through Patterns\n## “Vent Art” and the Violent, Representational Works of Sarah Kane\n## Identity: Within and Without\n## Speculative Futures as an Autofictional Genre\n# Works Cited\n# Creative Thesis – Someday in Portland\n## Someday in Portland (Part 1)\n## Mannequin Boy\n## Someday in Portland (Part 2)\n## Pas De Deux\n## Someday in Portland (Part 3)\n## Intermission\n## Someday in Portland (Part 4)\n## Somewhere Deeper in the West Wing\n## Someday in Portland (Part 5)\n## My Father’s Skeleton\n## Someday in Portland (Part 6)\n## Dreamland\n## Someday in Portland (Part 7)","[{\"question\":\"What kind of writing approach does the thesis project use?\",\"answer\":\"The project uses autofiction and leans into fictionalization and fantasy elements, treating genre categories as flexible tools for expressive human rhetoric.\"},{\"question\":\"What narrative structure is emphasized throughout the project?\",\"answer\":\"A tightly woven metaplot with a focus on time loop narratives drives the creative arc and links personal experience to fantastical exploration.\"},{\"question\":\"What inspired the thesis’s initial concepts and emotional framing?\",\"answer\":\"The concepts formed while the author was living through a period in 2024, influenced by rewatching the Doctor Who episode “Heaven Sent,” which was connected to acute mental health crises and shaped the interpretive lens of the work.\"}]","Someday in Portland -
