is aa very special place for me.Each time I revisit it I sink into memories—memories that goback to the spring of I929,when I first came through its im-pressive doors and stood and looked. It was a quiet sanctuaryin those days—the private library of William Andrews Clark,Jr.I remember it then as being much the same as it is today. The handsome exterior designed by Robert Farquhar has notchanged. The gardens are larger. The row of houses that wereon 25th Street that backed into the Library are now gone anda spacious garden has replaced them.Underground, more spacefor reading and storage has been added, not spoiling the orig-inal gem-like quality of the Library. The house on West AdamsBoulevard, where Mr.Clark then lived,is now a shell filledwith an overfow of books from the University Library.Eventu-ally it will go,to leave the whole park to the Library, with theexception,I hope,of the old coach house, which has been con-verted into a printing shop. This is an admirable adjunct to alibrary, and hopefully it may continue with a printer in resi-dence,to follow in the tradition of Will Cheney, who worksthere now. \nThe private library of William Andrews Clark,Jr.,was onewhich I quite hopelessly wanted to see even when I was in \ncollege at Occidental. It wasn't until the next spring after mygraduation, when I was incipient in printing, that the oppor-tunity came.Leura Dorothy Bevis was a friend from collegeworking at Dawson's Book Shop. She knew of my almostheroic worship of the books of the Doves and the Kelmscottpresses. She mentioned this to Robert Ernest Cowan,Mr.Clark’slibrarian, and he thought for a moment and then said to her,“Wehave all of the books of these presses;why don't you bringyoung Ritchie over to see them?” \nWe went on May II,I929,Dorothy Bevis,Gordon Newell,an old college friend and budding sculptor, and I.We wereallowed in through the wrought-iron gates of this walled do-main,and Cowan greeted us at the door of the Library.Hewas inordinately proud of every detail, and before we couldeven enter he had us admire the beauty of the exterior andhe took particular pains to point to the marble decoration abovethe door.“And what does that mean to you?\"he asked.\"Itis the Western Hemisphere,\"we answered. We had passed thetest, had given the correct password, and were allowed to enterthe sanctum. \nIt was such a quiet place in those days,a treasure house thatso very few could see and appreciate. We did.Of course,Iwanted to see the Kelmscott books and the Doves books.Wespread them out, touched them, turned the leaves, and gloriedin them—even the great Chaucer and the Doves Bible.I wasso very young then in my profession, and
