The two main components of an interactive con􀀜gurator are a user interface at the front-end and a knowledge representation and reasoning (KRR) framework at the back-end. In this paper we discuss important requirements for the underlying KRR system to support an interactive con􀀜guration process. Representative of many reasoning systems and tools used for implementing product con􀀜gurators, we selected MiniZinc, Choco, Potassco, Picat, CP-SAT solver, and Z3 for evaluation and reviewed them against the identi􀀜ed requirements. We observe that many of those requirements are not well supported by existing stand-alone solvers. \nKey Words: interactive con􀀜guration, product con􀀜guration, constraint programming, knowledge representation and reasoning, user interface \nCategory: I.2.4, F.4.1, H.5.2 \n1 Introduction \nWith the signi􀀜cant rise of individualized products over the last few years, product con􀀜guration has strengthened its role as an important business process [Felfernig et al., 2014] . State-of-the-art con􀀜gurators are tools that support this process using knowledge representation and reasoning (KRR) technologies such as constraint satisfaction [Junker, 2006] . Con􀀜guration is usually an interactive task, iteratively involving two parties: the user and the con􀀜gurator. The user’s goal is to con􀀜gure a product such that it is a valid and complete product variant that meets all his/her individual needs and requirements. The con􀀜gurator is a digital companion that supports the con􀀜guration process by deriving consequences of the user’s choices and by helping to avoid or resolve con􀀝icts. In this paper, we focus on con􀀜gurators where a tailor-made user interface (UI) or legacy system is enhanced with solving capabilities, [i.e. by](i.e. by) calling a generalsolver as a component.2 \n[Fig. 1] gives an overview of the typical architecture and scenario: At the front-end, a user interacts with the con􀀜gurator via a UI. The solver is avail- \n1 This is an extended version of [Falkner et al. , 2019] . Together with a domain-speci􀀜c product model (or knowledge base, KB), it forms the KRR component. This back-end is invoked by the control component, which 􀀜rst hands over product model and user-set values for decision variables from the UI to the API, and then sends the solver’s results back to the UI. While other back-end technologies, such as recommender systems, could facilitate interactive solving as well, in this article we focus on solvers for declarative knowledge bases. \nThe con􀀜gurator helps the user to con􀀜gure a product according to his/her needs and in full compliance with the product model.
