years in many parts of the world. They haveheld the attention of audiences and I believe that whenthey are done with honesty they will continue to do so,for they are the work of the masters of the short story. \nThe performer who presents them may feel herselfpart of a long and honorable tradition. For centuriesthe person who could tell a good story has been wel-comed with the seat nearest the fire, the tallest flagonof wine and the choicest cut of venison. In the dayswhen there were no newspapers and few books andtheatres the story teller took the place of historian, radio announcer, news analyst, editor, dramatist, actor, critic, popularizer of science, keyhole reporter and com-mentator on love, religion, family life, kings and theirmistresses, crimes and G-men and national glory. \nThis was especially true of the old ballads, which, even more truly than the works of a Boccaccio or aMaupassant, were the literary expression of a civiliza-tion.The names of the authors are lost in the mists ofthe past, but they have left us a picture of that vanishedtime—the colorful adventurous life, the gaiety, thepathos, the savagery, the profound religious emotion—all presented with the quick movement, the direct sim-plicity of statement that is the essence of the ballad.Noteven Maupassant could have shown more clearly the \npathos of Annie of Lochroyan, when she bids her loveopen the door. And the decisive, though lachrymose, action of the abducted damsel in\"The OutlandishKnight,\"when she pushes the villain into the sea, amusesus, even while we realize that it is true character draw-ing. \nThe ballads come naturally to the performer's lips, not only because of their simplicity, but because we feelinstinctively that they are the heritage of our commonpast.Even the city dweller of today knows them for alink with our forefathers, who used to gather aroundthe hearth fire of a winter evening,to sing or listen tothese ancient tales. It is not chance thatmakes the balladsstill alive today. In the mountains of Kentucky and Vir-ginia and by the harbors of Newfoundland and NovaScotia the descendants of those same Scotch and Eng-lish people still sing these songs. \nThe stories of Tristram and of Eliduc are also takenfrom the realm of folk lore, though in both cases thetale has been formed for us through the artistry of aliterary craftsman. \nMarie de France, who wrote the beautiful Lay ofEliduc, lived in the latter part of the twelfth centuryand passed part of her life at the court of the Englishking,Henry II.She traveled among the Breton peopleof her own land and collected from them the gems offolk lore and adapted them in her Lays,of which eightor nine survive. She seems to me to be one of the trulygreat women writers of all time.Certainly in the wifeof Eliduc she has set before us a character that is hardto match for nobility and loyalty and self sacrifice","cbCaiauJBNa0nluz","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiauJBNa0nluz","pdf",3240374,104,"English","# FOREWORD\n## Purpose and
