nuclearmaterials,and the huge problems concerning safe disposal ofnuclear wastes have caused many to doubt the ability of thenuclear program to deliver enough energy to meet the burgeoningdemands of the next 20 years.  \nAs oil supplies dwindle,and arguments for and against variousforms of nuclear energy approach critical mass,proponents ofalternative energy sources are scrambling to gain support fortheir ideas.And the alternative with the biggest and brightestfuture seems to be solar energy.  \nVarian Associates Inc.,Palo Alto,Ca1.,has produced an electricitygenerating solar cel1 with an efficiency of 20%.The solid-stategallium arsenide cel1 is 0.85 cm(0.33 in.)in diameter andcan produce 10 W.The cel1 operates with a 25.4 cm²(10 in.2)parabolic reflector which concentrates sunlight hitting thece11 by a factor of 1,000.  \nVarian solar cell researchers Lawrence James and Ronald Moonnow are assembling a bank of cells capable of producing 1 kW.It wil1 consist of 100 cells mounted in an array that wil1track the sun across the sky.  \nIn other recent solar energy developments:  \n● Progress at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory,Pasadena,Ca1.,is close behind Varian's.Dr.Richard
