British chemist Humphrey Davy hadbeen reading the work of Alessandro Volta,an Italian physicistknown for his study of electricity. \nIn 1799,Volta showed that a chemical reaction occurs in a moistmaterial in contact with two different metals. The chemical actionresults in an electric current.Volta gathered pairs of disks, one sil-ver and one zinc disk in each pair.He separated the pairs with paperor cloth moistened with salt water.By piling up a stack of thesedisks,Volta made the first battery, called a voltaic pile. \nDavy became even more fascinated with science when he learnedabout the work of English scientist William Nicholson.Nicholsondiscovered that when wires from a battery are placed in water, thewater breaks up into hydrogen and oxygen, which collect separatelyto form bubbles at the submerged ends of the wires. \nDavy wondered whether the same process, called electroly-sis,could be used to separate potash—a harsh substance thatremained when wood ashes were boiled in water—into its basic \nelements.Potash,also calledlye, was similar to anothersubstance called soda ash. Both were used in glassmak-ing.Because they were cor-rosive,or able to eat away atsubstances, they were oftenused for cleaning and makingsoaps. However, even withthese similarities, scientistsknew that there must be somedifference between the two;if Davy's
