He was educated at Williams College, where he took a degree in Greek and Latin, and at Yale University where he gained a Ph.D. in Sociology. Heis now lecturer in Sociology and Senior Research Fellow at the Russian Research Center at Harvard University. His books include Soviet Politics, The Dilemma oJPower, Terror and Progress, USSR, Political Power and Social Theory, A Critique oJPure Tolerance (co-author with Robert P. Wolff and Herbert Marcuse) and The Critical Spirit: Essays In Honour oj Herbert Marcuse (co-editor with K. H. Wolff) .
