ARTICLES \n## POLITICS AND APOLOGETICS\n\nJOHN P.CAPELLI,M.D. \nwith a growing acceptance of cohabiting individuals bear-ing children out of wedlock),and the removal of any ref-erences to God in schools, government, and public places, are all signs of a society whose moral compass has beenlost and whose values have become rooted in hedonism. \nIf God is just,I tremble for my country. \n—Thomas Jefferson \nIn September,2008,I wrote a piece about the impendingpresidential election, looking at it from an ordinaryCatholic's perspective.I sent the article to a Catholic paperin New Jersey, which declined to publish it on grounds ofChurch/State separation.Four years later,Catholics andmany other religious believers feel besieged by the presentadministration.Bishops from all across the country havecome to denounce its birth control mandate, imposed uponCatholic healthcare sponsors. The irony of the whole situ-ation is furthered by the President himself, who quotesscripture(“To whom much is given, much is expected”[Lk 12:48])to imply that Our Lord is calling for increasedtaxes on “the rich”.The scripture clearly means that indi-viduals are to come to the assistance of their brethren inneed, voluntarily,as a means of doing good and gaininggrace. It was not meant as a mandate for government toconfiscate earnings under a system of taxation as themeans of distributing grace!I believe that the article Iwrote was correct then and is relevant now.The test oftime has borne out the validity of my concerns at that timeregarding the assault on religion and our values.ThereforeI shall repeat here the points I made then, much as theywere stated in 2008. \nUnfortuna","cbCaidD5EU2mab2G","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaidD5EU2mab2G","pdf",2310858,32,"English","# Scholars for Social
