|\n\n# A Mature ApproachTo Marriage\n\nAnthony A.D'Souza* \nThe family is the corner-stone of society and the bulwark ofcivilization. The strength and welfare of any society depend to agreat degree on the strength of family life that prevails among thepeople. And the strength of family life depends mainly on theideals of marriage that are maintained and practised throughoutthe land.Hence it is vitally important that those who entermarriage uphold a noble and inspiring ideal of marriage. \n## Why do people marry?\n\nMost people, being rational beings, have reasons for what theywant to do or achieve.Sometimes these reasons are well thoughtout motives for wise decisions. For instance,a young man will tellyou seriously why he wants to be an engineer,a mechanic,a medicaldoctor or an air-pilot;a young lady will tell you why she wants tobe a teacher,a stenographer,a nurse or an air-line stewardess.Young people can give you plenty of reasons for taking up one careerin preference to another and expatiate on the pros and cons of thatcareer. But when it cones to the question,“Why do you want \nto marry?”,young people either hesitate or do not seem to knowwhy. \nIn every human heart there is the basic need and desire forhappiness, security, companionship, love—and the fear of unhappi-ness,insecurity,loneliness,failure.And yet two young people inlove who wish to marry may not quite realize whether and how thesebasic human needs will be satisfied in marriage. Some of theseimpulses may be weak and unconscious;others may be so strongthat one may believe that no other niotive matters.Sone maywant to marry because they are driven by strong sexual attraction.Others may want to marry because marriage can mean stability andsecurity;others because they feel lonely;and others still becausemarriage is the natural and accepted status of adults in our society. \n## Personal preparedness for marriage\n\nSometimes young people strike up a casual relationshipwith a person of the opposite sex—and before they have time andopportunity to get sufficiently well-acquainted they decide to getmarried. Many unhappy husbands and wives who have marriedin haste could have avoided the heartbreak of marital failure, ifonly they had given thenselves time enough to test each other'sreadiness for marriage. In a marriage that is built on quicksand, they are least likely to find that love and companionship they aresearching for.“Marry in haste and repent at leisure”warns theold saying \nPeople who have formed imniature ideas of love and marriagefrom romantic movies, magazines, novels and songs are likely to bedisappointed in marriage.Though physical attraction naturallyplays an important role in the enotional life of an individual choos-ing one's parfner in life, yet, too much emphasis on‘emotionalattraction'may be a sign of immaturity, which will hamper theestablishment of a happy and pernanent life together. \nA happy and successful marriage needs intelligence, love anddetermination.Happiness in marriage will not just happen:itmust be worked f","cbCaiq3q5v3fOFid","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiq3q5v3fOFid","pdf",3218467,84,"English","# MARRIAGEandFAMILY WELFARE\n#
