They were eastern brown snakes, known to be among the deadliest types of venomous snakes in Australia, and therefore among the deadliest types of venomous snakes in the world. So great were Wüster ’s scandals that, in Hoser ’s haste to recount them, he had at certain points missed important turns, forcing him to perform additional acts of skill and bravery in his Nissan Micra in order to make his appointments. Now he paused momentarily in both the cleaning and theretelling. He crossed the room, still clutching the snakes. He pulled down a title from the bookcase and brought it to the corner of his desk, next to where I was sitting. The book was called Snakes of Western Australia. He flipped straight to the page he wanted and pointed at a snake. I recognized the snake he was pointing at as being of critical importance, central to the whole story, but I found that at that moment, my attention was divided between, on the one side, that important snake from Western Australia, and on the other side, two important snakes from eastern Australia, whose heads were now bobbing several inches from my bare calf.  \nRaymond Hoser is the Snakeman. It is a title he has trademarked and at times jealously defended. He has also trademarked “reptile man,”“man with snakes,”“snake handler,” “hold the animals,” and a host of other phrases, including his own name. As a day job, Hoser runs Snakebusters, a Melbourne company that offers several services. One service is snake removal. This is a surprisingly common trade in Australia, akin to plumbing, with which it sometimes intersects; Hoser has removed numerous snakes from toilet bowls and other fixtures. Another service is snake shows, most often performed at children’s birthday parties.
