As inseparable from experience, movement is a wordless medium that gives us access to the life-world. Living things move. Like dance, movement is a sign for life and, in \nitself, a fundamental form of expression.” \nSondra Fraleigh \nCourse Description: SMED-1076 Applied Somatic Movement Education seeks to advance student’s knowledge of how to integrate Laban’s movement analysis, Bartenieff Fundamentals, Body-Mind Centering and Authentic Movement for the purpose of observing, witnessing, instructing, facilitating, and/or assessing self, individuals and/or groups. SMED-1076 aims to enhance student’s confidence to become a guide for specialized movement activities, somatizations, physical cueing techniques and/or embodied anatomy explorations with the purpose of improving awareness of one’s self, and/or for individuals and/or a group. The course emphasizes the importance ofwhen and where to stress modalities such as social emotional learning, self-regulation, and non-judgmental verbal and non-verbal interaction to which a greater balance of one’s body-mind integration and one’s relationship to their environment heals and promotes wellness, equanimity in communities and physical (whole body) integration. \nCOURSE RATIONALE \n“The main object of all this material is to suggest additional modes of perceiving yourself and the world around you, using your live body totally-body/mind/feeling-as a key to that perception. The heart of that ‘liveness’ is movement and, therefore, it is the movement itself that we have studied. How your body functions in movement-Body/Effort/Shape and what that means to your perceptions and expression.” Irmgard Bartenieff \nINSTRUCTIONAL METHODOLOGY \nEllen Bartel will conduct live in-person meetings at Highland Campus from May 30-July 26, 2023 \nStudents must complete semester 1076 with a 75 grade or higher in order to graduate from the course.
