For those who are interested in learning more about the SEPS literacy plan, please contact: John Cselovszki, PreK-6 principal at \n(507) 794-7905 [or](or john.cselovszki@sleepyeye.mntm.org)[ john.cselovszki@sleepyeye.mntm.org](or john.cselovszki@sleepyeye.mntm.org) \nThe purpose of this literacy plan is to ensure that ALL PreK to grade 3 students \nwill achieve grade-level proficiency. \nLiteracy Plan Summary \nThe goal of the SEPS district is to assure that all students will successfully achieve the Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards in English Language Arts (2010) for their grade level. The standards are aligned with the district’s curriculum. The English Language Arts curriculum is systematic and consistent across grade levels. With the diverse backgrounds and specific learning needs of many, it is essential to choose an approach that allows targeted instruction based on individual student needs. Preschool through kindergarten utilizes a basal reader for whole group instruction. Teachers pre-teach vocabulary, model fluent reading and choose grade level appropriate text that are motivating and meaningful. Guided reading groups, whether it is skill based or reading level based, are used to supplement and reinforce skill lessons. These groups are ever changing depending on test data. The Guided Reading approach continues for grades 1 through 6. In grades 1 through 4, a personalized learning approach levels students into mixed age level groups based on Fountas and Pinnell levels. In these grade levels, a combination of Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) and Guided Reading lessons are crafted to teach and practice grade level standards. The approach used depends on the level of the students within each group. The LLI program focuses on phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills at each level and Minnesota State Standards are reinforced during these reading sessions. In grades 5 and 6, a novel study approach is used with students in combination with the LLI program. Selection into each program is based on student need and ability. Regardless of the \navenue, the focus of reading instruction at Sleepy Eye Elementary is a small group environment and is reinforced through level based and skill based instruction. \nThe Daily 5, modeled after the 2 Sisters (2008), is used to develop independent, self-motivated, disciplined, and creative readers. The Daily 5 approach is used everyday to manage and develop independent readers while the teacher is allowed time to provide differentiated instruction through the Guided Reading approach. \nTo enhance this curriculum, our district has an elementary library with a variety of fiction and nonfiction reading materials, covering a wide range of reading levels. The district has also purchased a guided reading library rich with leveled text for grades K-6 to supplement reading instruction. In addition, Scholastic Short Reads for levels J-Z are available for teachers to use as well as the entire Reading A-Z library of printable books. From these resources, teachers are able to make selections based upon students’ reading proficiency. Each classroom also has its own leveled reading center where students can enjoy books and other resources. Grade level appropriate text is sent home as homework nightly. Students are encouraged to read 20-30 minutes each night whether independently or with a guardian. All K-3 students receive classroom reading instruction for a minimum of 120 minutes each day. Relevant technology engages students in meaningful learning activities. \nIncluded within this 120 minutes of reading instruction, students participate in specific readin","cbCaimjkce9HH1Jc","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaimjkce9HH1Jc","pdf",598197,22,"English","# Literacy Plan Summary\n## Instructional approach by grade level\n## Daily 5 and classroom learning supports\n## Reading interventions and progress monitoring\n## Technology resources for literacy","[{\"question\":\"What is the main purpose of the PreK–3 literacy plan?\",\"answer\":\"The plan’s purpose is to ensure all PreK through grade 3 students achieve grade-level proficiency in English Language Arts.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the district organize reading instruction across grades PreK–6?\",\"answer\":\"Preschool to kindergarten uses basal readers, while guided reading groups are used to reinforce skill lessons; grades 1–4 use mixed-age leveled groupings based on Fountas and Pinnell, combining Leveled Literacy Intervention with guided reading.\"},{\"question\":\"Which interventions and technology tools support students’ reading progress?\",\"answer\":\"Students receive specific reading interventions based on benchmark results with weekly or biweekly progress monitoring.
