It describes typical brain-wave patterns and links them to nervous activity, muscle twitches, breathing, eye movements, and body temperature. It then outlines sleep as repeating stages—alpha, REM, beta, gamma, and delta—covering functions from light rest to deep slumber. 1. \nAn electroencephalograph(EEG)isused to chart electrical changes goingon in the brain during sleep. An EEGis an instrument for recording electri-cal currents that develop in the brain.Electrodes—small bits of special metal—applied to the skin can pick up andrelay impulses to a recording instru-ment.The electrical energy measuredis transformed into a written record oflines on a graph.Note some typicalbrain wave patterns shown on thispage.Nervous activity is matched withmuscle twitches, breathing, eye move-ments and other body movements, andbody temperature.Scientists analyzethese brain wave lines, section by sec-tion,on the paper. \nA Night of Sleep \nYou may think that sleep is a blanketof darkness—a period of nothingness. However, according to the latest scien-tific research, sleep has many facets. For example, sleep seems to be di-vided into four stages, ranging in orderfrom light to deep sleep. These stageshave been called alpha, beta, gamma, and delta sleep. Some types may bemore essential than others. \nAlpha sleep—This is a light stageof sleep.Body muscles relax.Respira- \nPage2 \n七4h \ntion becomes more regular and theheart rate becomes slower.A noise orthe sound of a voice can easilyawaken the sleeper. \nThe last part of this stage of sleeppresently interests scientists the most.It is called the REM period, for rapideye movement. The sleeper's eyes rolland dart around at a rapid rate.Dream-ing occurs during this period. \nBeta sleep—This is a sounder sleepthan alpha, though one can be easilyawakened from it.The eyes roll moreslowly than in REM.A fundamentalchange in brain activity occurs here. Many laboratory subjects have beenfound to sleep with eyes open in thisstage. \nGamma sleep—This level of sleepis much deeper than beta.A muchlouder noise is needed to awaken thesleeper. The heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature drop. \nDelta sleep—This last stage of sleepseems to restore our body energy.Muscles are very relaxed. The bodyrarely moves. This is the deepest stageof sleep.Prolonged delta sleep seemsto occur if one has lost sleep in pre-vious nights. \nAbout 60 minutes after fallingasleep,a person drifts back to the \nlighter level of sleep seen in REM.The cycle of sleep is alpha, beta, gamma, delta,REM,etc. The earlypart of alpha occurs only in the firstcycle.Sleep is a repetition of thiscycle. The full cycle of stages takesabout 90-120 minutes to complete. With each cycle, the REM period in-creases and the delta sleep decreases. \n# Sleep Disorders\n\nCommon sleep disorders accompanyphysical or mental disease.Studyingthese disorders has enlightened ourknowledge of the normal sleep pro-cess. \nInsomnia—The inability to sleep isa widespread complaint. The great useof sleeping pills might indicate thatmany people suffer from insomniaHowever, research has indicated thatmany people who think they haven'tslept well—really have. Some sleepsubjects who complained about notsleeping much all night had brain wavepatterns indicating sound sleep.Someinsomnia may be imaginary.Other sub-jects reporting insomnia spent muchtime in stages of light sleep. In emo-tionally caused insomnia, excessive ac-tivity in a brain region may producearousal. An insufficient supply of a \nchemical to","cbCaipcU95yPdecf","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaipcU95yPdecf","pdf",4229935,"English","#
