language test aspart of the process to register with theGMC to work again as doctors in the UK.Most choose OET,a medical English test,over IELTS,an academic English test.  \nThe scores doctors need to achieve inOET are,understandably,very high toensure communication with patients andcolleagues is at the right level to providesafe and effective care.Refugee doctorsdon't tend to arrive with the necessaryEnglish skills.They need expert tuition,plenty of practice,and access to materialsand mock tests to reach the level required.  \nSLC has provided OET preparationto hundreds of refugee doctorssince the test was recognised by theGMC in 2018,working with refugeesupport organisations,localauthorities,and the NHS.  \nWorking with the Lincolnshire RefugeeDoctor Project (LRDP)  \nThis case study highlights the ongoingwork we do with the refugee doctors onthe programmes run by the LincolnshireRefugee Doctor Project(LRDP).  \nIn 2020,LRDP commissioned SLC toprovide support to the doctors on theirprogramme who wanted to pass OETMedicine.  \nAfter a successful initial pilot,we designeda rolling 4-module programme that wouldprovide regular start dates and enabledoctors to attend an appropriate numberof lessons according to their level andneeds.  \nPre-course assessment to ensuresuitability√40 hours of tuition plus assignmentsper module  \n√2×3-hour lessons a week over 7weeks,followed by a1-week break  \n√Smallclasses(up to 10 learners)withan expert OET tutor  \n√Online self-study support from ReachOET B Medicine  \n√Training covering all 4 OET papers plusrelated vocabulary and grammarMock test at the end of each module  \n## √OET readiness report\n\nAttendance,lesson notes,mock testresults and teacher comments are on anintegrated course management systemthat can be accessed at any time by SLCand LRDP.  \nLRDP provide wrapround support,including guidance for learners not at thelevel to enter the course,follow up tuitionfor those completing the 4 modules butstill not quite ready to take the test,andongoing logistical and technical supportfor learners.  \nLRDP also then provide follow on trainingfor doctors to enable them to pass theand thenregisterwith theGMC.  \nRegistering as a doctor with the GMC isnot an overnight process.It takes time topass the exams and go through theregistration process.Many refugeedoctors manage very challenging livesoutside lessons,working in various jobs-often low-level shift work-while theystudy and look after their families.  \nAccommodation,visa status andemployment may all be uncertain andmake it difficult for many to stay on theprogramme for the time needed.Giventhese challenges,the programme hasbeen a remarkable success.Moststudents are incredibly motivated,  \nhard-working and resilient,making steadyprogress over the months we teach them.  \nWe see from the other work we do withrefugee learners just how difficult it is tostick to a long-term education programme.  \nTo date,79 doctors have been taught orare currently on the SLC courses.Of these:  \n19 have passed OET and are nowregistered or are registering with theGMC.Many of these are working inNHS Trusts in Lincolnshire.  \nA further 19 have passed OET,of whom15 are undergoing PLAB training and 4have left the project.  \n15 are currently preparing for OET.  \n√26 left the programme before itfinished.  \n79doctors have been taught or arecurrently enrolled on SLC OETcourses through the LRDP  \n19  \n19  \npassed OET and are  \npassed OET,with 15now  \nundergoing PLAB  \nregistered or registering
