Skip Difficult Questions After 30 Seconds \nThink of time as a precious asset, your asset, that must be managed wisely on standardized exams. Time invested in wrong answers or answers likely to be incorrect is a waste of precious resources. A small amount of extra effort to be certain you correctly answer the questions you know is probably a better use of time than tackling a question where you lack confidence and get it wrong. If you have had any experience preparing for the SHSAT, you have likely been told, “Don’t get too caught up in any one question.”Remember SHSAT questions are designed to be answered in about 30 seconds or less by trained test takers who know the subject matter, can diagnose the question, and arrive at the answer efficiently. The solutions are not designed to be complicated answers to advanced questions like you may see in advanced placement classes in school. Read the question with the mindset that your first priority isn’t to jump headfirst into calculations. Decide if you can confidently answer the question in about 10-30 seconds. If yes, then begin the process of solving the question and make extra certain you do not fall for any trap answer choices. Too often students rush through the easy part and make “careless”mistakes despite confidence in their solution. On the other hand, if you do not see the path to the solution after a few seconds, then skip the question and move on temporarily. Be careful about casually marking down your best guess at the moment and moving on. Most students take this approach, and it generally does not help to maximize scores because the SHSAT, and SAT for that matter, are designed to trap students who only have a partial understanding of the problem or are working off a hunch. Guessing should be your last option, not the first. Instead, it will be much more effective to remember your training and your understanding of the test design. There is only one objectively correct answer that can be found in the text for reading questions and it helps to ask yourself the following questions. Have you misunderstood or overlooked a part of the text or even a single word in an answer choice? Have you found the relevant section of the text? Are you making a common assumption that seems obvious, but lacks evidence in the text? If the bottleneck doesn’t become apparent in under 30 seconds, move on. Investing time ina question you are likely to get wrong anyway is inefficient. Invest your time into carefully picking all the lower hanging fruit first. \nThe test taker has control of which question to answer next and how much time to invest in each. Take advantage of that freedom--one of the few available to test takers on standardized exams. There is no rule that the exam must be processed from beginning to end in order. Test takers can and often should practice approaching the questions in several passes to avoid getting bogged down with any one question. In many cases, that results in even more than two passes. The second pass questions are ones that can be solved with a little extra effort where the student will review questions like the ones above and see the solution on the second pass. The third pass might begin after half the allotted test time has passed and the remaining questions will likely provide an additional challenge. Avoid the temptation to guess and stick to your training while sufficient time \nremains. Only as the end of time approaches be sure to make a guess on all remaining questions and do not leave any blank answers. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so students can only possibly gain by making a guess. Guessing strategies and other time saving tips are covered in later lessons.","cbCaijXcrLzA9MvJ","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaijXcrLzA9MvJ","pdf",96815,"English","# Skip Difficult Questions After 30 Seconds\n## Answer quickly and avoid traps\n## Use multiple passes and pacing control\n## Guess only when time runs out","[{\"question\":\"Why should you skip difficult SHSAT questions after about 30 seconds?\",\"answer\":\"Because time spent on questions you are unlikely to answer correctly is inefficient.
