The foreword explains why the plays were written, connecting the author’s adopted home in Canada and Vancouver with formative experiences in Detroit, including racial polarization and violence. It argues that theatre can communicate ideas and work toward social change, emphasizing that fictional characters reflect real experiences reported by youth in Vancouver and Toronto, and positions the plays as a vote for the Vancouver my adopted city.Iam often asked why I came here. The answer to that questionalso explains why the plays in this volume were written. \nWhen I was growing up in Detroit I used to spend my \nsummers in Algonquin Park,Ontario. The tranquility of thoselakes and forests always served as an antidote to the tumult inmy home town. One summer, when I came back from canoeing,I found out that Detroit was burning. Our house was only a fewmiles from Twelfth Street—I had no idea whether the rioting hadreached my neighborhood or not. \nIt hadn’t—but the repercussions had. When I returned to highschool that fall, the tension was unbearable.Coley High washalf white, half black—and ready to blow up.It did.One day, sitting in english class,we heard a sound like thunder comingfrom the hallway. The teacher looked out the window and said,\"Class dismissed.\"The thunder was the sound of peoplerunning. And the sound of people being beaten.Groups ofblacks on whites, groups of whites on blacks. When I gotoutside all over the schoolgrounds were little hills of people, pummeling each other. All I remember is running and running, trying to escape from the insanity. \nSome years later, when I was invited to pursue my MFA at theUniversity of British Columbia,I jumped at the chance.I hatedDetroit, hated the fact that things had become so polarized, sofar gone that I couldn't see an end to the social problems.And","cbCaihiVxlmXq2GJ","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaihiVxlmXq2GJ","pdf",3121388,118,"English","# FOREWORD\n## Background and adopted home\n## Theatre as communication and change\n##
