Maybe you noticed how it was filled with life. Many different plants and animals all live and grow well together. All the different plants and animals have the food and water they need to grow strong and healthy.  \nBut many times, if we compare these natural places to our gardens or fields, we do not see the same balance of life. We do not see everything thriving and living together in harmony. Often we have learned to plant in modern ways that have ignored the lessons we can learn from nature and from our ancestors.  \nIn these difficult times of climate change, many people who grow things to eat or sell are noticing problems in their fields and gardens. Maybe there is not enough water. Maybe there are floods. Maybe the crops do not grow as well or produce good harvests like they did before. Maybe chemical fertilizers and pesticides are polluting the soil and water. Maybe the good top soil is blowing away or washing away, leaving hard or rocky ground where plants do not grow well.  \nWhat if we could change some of our methods and make our fields and gardens more like the natural places that are full of life? This book presents six lessons from nature that will help make the soil in our gardens and fields more healthy, balanced, and full of life.  \nIf we incorporate these six principles in our methods of farming and gardening, the soil will improve. There will be more biodiversity (a larger variety of plants and animals will live and grow on our land) . And we will not need to use expensive chemical fertilizers and pesticides that can pollute the soil and water.  \n1. KNOW ABOUT YOUR CONTEXT  \nKnowing the context of your garden or fields means understanding as much as you can about the conditions that affect plants and animals where you live. Questions you can ask to learn more about your context are:  \n•What plants and animals live and grow in this area when nobody is planting or keeping livestock?  \n•What is the soil like?  \n•What is the climate like?  \n•What are the normal seasons or cycles of planting, growing, and harvesting?  \n•How much water is available or how much rain is expected?  \n•When is your land naturally wet or dry?  \n•How did people use the land in the past?  \nKnowing about your context will help you make better decisions and use resources more wisely. Try to grow plants that naturally grow well in your climate and in the soil where you live. Keep or plant some native wild plants and flowers alongside the plants or trees you want to harvest for food or other uses.
