In research related to forest disturbances, forest structure, ecological diversity, and  \nforest sustainability, the concept of site quality holds significant importance. Site quality can  \nbe described as the combination of physical and biological factors that determine a site's  \ncapacity to sustain tree growth. Thus, it becomes crucial to have a comprehensive  \nunderstanding of site quality curves, known as site index curves. This paper endeavors to  \npresent a methodology for creating precise and reliable site index curves tailored to unevenaged stands. To reach this goal, initially standard non-linear regression modeling was  \napplied. Furthermore, in the field of forestry and environmental studies, especially in Greek  \nforests, there are high demands for accurate predictions about forest health, potential and  \nproductivity. The rapidly developed field of machine learning can provide solutions to these  \nrequirements. To this direction, to directly predict the site index for each tree, the  \neffectiveness of the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBr) ensemble machine learning  \ntechnique for regression modeling was investigated, aiming to effectively capture the non  \nlinear characteristics of site index curves. In the realm of environmental and forest modeling,  \nthe studied simulation approach showed its potential to serve as a crucial foundation for  \nadvancing sustainable forest management.  \n1 Introduction  \nSite quality is a vital indicator that determines the following actions in a specified region. In forestry, a site can be defined as an area studied for its environmental characteristics. Additionally, this definition includes two meanings depending on the research context. First, a site refers to an area or geographical region that supports tree growth. Second, it denotes the capability of an area to sustain tree growth [1] . Site quality can provide critical information that will determine management handlings, such as the decision of the optimal harvesting age, the selection of tree species that can be used in reforestation design, the protection of selected forest areas, etc.  \nUneven-aged or all-aged stands include not less than a set of three defined age classes. Trees in those classifications are comparable in age, diameter, and height [2] . Uneven-aged Forest management can transform stands. When a regeneration cutting technique is applied, the random natural tree distribution will slowdown, leading to a continuous reproduction effect. Site index (SI) is a correlated measurement between site quality and tree growth. It can be defined as the ability of an area of land to grow a certain amount of tree species with specific growth characteristics [3] .  \nSite index serves as a vital indicator of site quality, depicted through a relative curve that illustrateshow the dominant height, which is the height of the tallest growing trees, of forest stand trees at a reference diameter can develop, in relation to a specified reference dominant  \ndiameter, leading the accurate quantification of the productivity of forest areas. Accompanying the site index are corresponding curves that effectively depict forest productivity by establishing the relationship between the total height and the diameter at breast height (1.3 meters above the ground) of dominant and codominant trees within the forest stand.  \nOn specific sites that have been damaged or suppressed, the height growthof the toptrees is noticeably reduced. In such cases, the site index is the most suitable indicator, as it utilizes tree characteristics (such as diameter at breast height) that were established well before the damage or suppression occurred.
