The author contrasts distraction and algorithmic noise with the stillness required for deep thought, then uses a personal meditation-retreat experience to illustrate the distinction between pain and suffering. Grounded in mindfulness, the book presents practical insights for writers to continue creating despite rejection, criticism, and self-doubt, turning hardship into a teachable path.","[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nBegin Reading \nTable of Contents \nAbout the Author \nCopyright Page \nThank you for buying this \nSt. Martin’s Publishing Group ebook. \nTo receive special offers, bonus content, and info on new releases and other great reads, sign up for our newsletters. \nOr visit us online at \n[us.macmillan.com/newslettersignup](us.macmillan.com/newslettersignup)[ ](us.macmillan.com/newslettersignup)[For email updates on the author](For email updates on the author), click here. \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nThe author and publisher have provided this e-book to you for your personal use only. We live in a world that is designed to pull our attention in a thousand directions with an endless churn of social media, notifications, and algorithmic noise that leaves us depleted and unmoored. Writing, more than almost anything else, asks for the opposite: stillness, presence, a mind that can rest in one place long enough to follow a thread where it leads. That’s no longer our default state. If you’re feeling that, you’re not alone, and it’s not your fault, but it is in your power to change it. In many ways, engaging in activities that require deep thought has become a radical act. It’s true in all aspects of our lives, but for writing in particular, and if you’ve picked up this book, it’s highly likely that you are, or long to be, a writer. \nYou probably have ideas that bang around inside your skull while you’re driving your car or washing the dishes. You’re well-versed in what it’s like to struggle with distractions. Maybe you’re familiar with the pressure of writer ’s block or the unruly voices of inner critics that seem intent on shutting you down before you even get started. Perhaps you’ve amassed a collection of notes scribbled on scraps of paper and you steal time whenever you can to try to get words on the page. You do all this with the intention of putting your work out into the world, where inevitably someone (somewhere) will not appreciate it. Rejection, criticism, and disappointment are part of being a writer. If you want to stay in this game, you have to learn to deal with those, too. \nAll of which is to say: Writing can be hard. \nWriting well can be even harder. In my experience, writing only gets more challenging as you get better at it. Before I cared about diction, imagery, and precision, I could slap together a few thousand words on \ninstinct and call it a story. These days, I take the time to home in on and whittle away at ideas until the words on the page accurately represent what I’m trying to say. It’s work that requires deep focus. It’s hard. And I love it. \nI can’t promise to make writing easier, but in these pages I’ve accumulated the insights and practices that have helped me to write more and suffer less, because even if you don’t believe me just yet, you can do hard things without all the agonizing. It took me a long time to untangle this pain and suffering, and I owe my moment of revelation to a big pile of onions. Come with me on a little jaunt back in time, and I’ll tell you about the day that changed everything for me. \nPAIN AND SUFFERING \nOn my first extended meditation retreat, in 2009, the instructor gave a talk about how mindfulness can help us discern the difference between pain and suffering. I was not getting it. Pain and suffering. One follows the other like day follows night. To be in pain is to suffer.
