It addresses recurring workshop questions about belief, authority, purpose, identity, and the proper work of a sister, alongside tensions in communication with pastors, superiors, fellow sisters, and the laity. The article traces how post-renewal changes brought new problems, leaving many insecure, discouraged, isolated, or cynical, and calls for practical ways to create genuine community J.REIDY,M.D. \n\"I hope to learn something about how real community comes about andhow to make it happen.\"A Sister who attended a Sister FormationWorkshop last summer wrote this. For her the workshop would be asuccess if she could learn what a real community is,and if she couldlearn how to make it happen. She was not an exception;this was mythird year at the workshops and in all of them the Sisters had the samerequest. There was an urgency about it;it was a most serious concernin their own personal lives, and also because they were superiors anddirectors of training they had to tell others about a real communityand guide them in creating it. \nSo many things had changed in the lives of the religious in the pastten years, and still the Sisters came to the workshops with the sameproblems I had heard in the 1950's.They felt insecure,panicky,dis-couraged,doubtful,isolated.They did not know what to do with theirangry feelings or with the hostile feelings of others,or what to thinkabout jealousy and competition. They felt unable to be close to others;or they worried when they recognized their wishes for very close rela-tionships.Many felt guilty if they were not doing something \"relevant.\"Not all of the Sisters had these problems;there were many happySisters. There were also many happy Sisters before the 1950's. \nThe changes had not solved the problems, and in some cases hadadded problems. This discouraged many who had tried so hard, and itleft others apathetic, even cynical. After some of our great nationalcrises, for example, the assassinations of John and Robert Kennedy andMartin Luther King, many people hoped that things would change.Theywere disappointed that there was no permanent change in our nation, and that even the outward appearance of change did not last.Somethings seemed worse;the divisions among our people were greater. \nThis is the way it has been with religious life.First was the romantic, exciting side of the renewal, the meetings, headlines, and hopes.Thendisputes, angry divisions, disappointment, and discouragement. The Sis-ters used to
