my understandingof the term with a few underlying thoughts. \nFirst of all, retirement is a word symbol for a complex of mentalconcepts.Like other words,it will elicit different concepts from sub-culture to sub-culture and from individual to individual. These conceptswill be highly colored by the nature of each society. In our Westerntechnical atmosphere,we emphasize certain values as worthwhile, yetwe know that all of them are not totally laudable. We esteem youth, production, performance, sex, material possessions, academic degrees, research, and speed. It is with such a value structure that we havecome to develop our conceptual complex for the word\"retirement.“Retirement in such a culture has come to be a symbol for what I wouldcall a \"no more\"complex. \nIf I were to ask you what thoughts come to mind when you hearthe word retirement,we may possibly come up with a pooled responsesuch as this:\"Retirement is a time for no more dignity,no more youth-fulness,no more respect,no more status,no more autonomy,no morephysical vigor.\"Perhaps some may even say,\"No more happiness andjoy.“In our Western culture, conditioned by activism, retirement hascome to have a negative, debilitating connotation. \nIt seems to me that in order to convert this negative outlook intoa positive one,one of two alternatives has to be followed.Either wehave to reconstruct a positive conceptual complex for the word retire-ment,or we should look around and find somebody with enough in-genuity and creativity who can coin a word for the positive process wereally want to consider.I have made an attempt to follow through onthe first alternative—to construct a concept by redefining a term. \nBasically the understanding of retirement should be the same foranybody in any walk of life. Therefore I define retirement as“a gradualor sudden transition from one's usual work in society to
