tell us much about the\"new breed\"religiouswho asks“Why?\"from the day she enters;about“rebellious\"”Sistersand priests of all ages who can hardly wait to escape all the shacklesthat'bind”them;about the restrictions and don'ts in the CatholicChurch and religious life;about the lack of personal \"self-fulfillment“in religious life.Sometimes one wonders if the writers who are pre-senting this particular type of“message“to the world have reallylistened in faith to the“message of the Word”before they beganspeaking to others. \nThese“not-listening”and“not-person”ideas make obediencenegative, stifling to persons.Instead, could we not look at obedienceas a positive“openness-to”:as responsive communication betweenone person and Another,as commitment in faith to real, livingPersons—not paralyzing restraint under an impersonal law? \nWord,response,person,dialogue,listening—these communica-tion words have become daily vocabulary for the modern religious, educated as she is in psychology, group dynamics,Scripture.VanKaam speaks of communicative listening as an integral element inobedience;he calls the superior the\"master-listener,\"in fact.Iflistening is so integral to obedience,it is quite evident that theremust first be something to listen to:words, speech, real dialoguebetween persons.Modern theology affirms the interpersonal,exis-tential,dynamic,and“offering“character of speech.DeLugo em-phasized this dynamic nature of speech, essential to“anotherness,”when he said that speech not only wants to set forth an object ofthought, but also wants to see the object grasped.Speech thereforesets up a summons-response circuit which develops into a dialogue.2This is not simply a utilitarian kind of speech which merely impartsknowledge;but speech on a higher level which develops self-expres-sion,reveals PERSONS. \n1 Latourelle,Rene,S.J.,\"Faith:Personal Encounter With God,\"TheologyDigest,Autumn 1962,p.233.2 Ibid.,p.233. \nWe find precisely this type of dialogue going on between theperson of Christ and the person of the obedient religious. In thebeginning,God“spoke”a Word. And the Word was God,as SaintJohn tells us.This Second Person,in expressing himself, revealinghis personality to us,summons a response just as does every otherperson revealing himself.Persons now, just as did men of all ages, answer him in faith—but,to be ever-responsive,faith must be\"lived out\"in the existential situation in which the individual personhas been placed by a call. For the
