\n# The Value of Religious Life\n\nPHILIP D.CRISTANTIELLO,Ph.D. \nFor many years people in religious life did not interest me.Even thoughit was easy to spot them as something different in their distinctive habits,I seldom wondered what they were really like.It didn't seem to matterwhether they shaved their heads, went for physical examinations whenthey became ill or wore regular bathing suits when they went swimming. But that was way back then. Now,people in religious life do concern me.I have been associated with various religious orders as a consulting psy-chologist for the past six years.Yet,despite this,I cannot confidentlyreport that I know much about how religious they are or what impacttheir beliefs have on their interpersonal behavior. One thing which Ihave observed, for instance,is that many individuals in religious voca-tions write and speak about religion as a subject—not as a personal ex-perience.I mean they discuss it academically or as a social phenomenonand not as a part of their personal make-up. \nI don't want you to think that I intend to get very analytical at thispoint.Just like the painter who steps periodically back from his canvasto gain perspective,so the psychologist emerges occasionally from hisspecialized preoccupation of detail to survey the larger meaning devel-oping from innumerable observations.Only by moving back and forthfrom view point to view point does one gain some sense of proportion. \n# DIVINE VALUES AND THE AMERICAN SCENE\n\nAnyone's religious life is his own devotion to that which is heldto be of ultimate importance. It is his sensitivity and attachment to divinevalues, and he may hold to his values because of upbringing, teaching, independent learning, and what he regards as rational choice.“Adher-ence to a religion is necessarily exclusive, because it is and has to bespecific.\"Yet observers of the contemporary American scene point tothe increasing miscellany of values and the secularization of religion.Denominational colleges are decreasing in numbers while those whichdo remain blur their identification in order to meet financial needs.Publicinstitutions on the other hand cannot endorse one religious position andbecome attackers of another. They remain committed to moral andreligious neutrality. At the same time, individuals in religious vocationsare being criticized for their absorption with secular activities. \n1Miller,C.R.,Living with Anxiety,Pilgrim Press,Philadelphi","cbCaieTqF2oY7dk7","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaieTqF2oY7dk7","pdf",2512551,"English","# The Value
