Psychology of Community\n\nROBERT J.McALLISTER,M.D. \nSoldiers die in Viet Nam,and we watch the event on televisionwith litle more emotion than we might watch a re-run of“All Quieton the Western Front.\"Citizens die in the racial violence of Detroit, and as we scan the photographs of death on the front pages of ournewspapers,we hurry on to the comic page because of our concernwith the death of one of Rex Morgan's patients.Children die ofhunger in American slums, and their dying is not as noteworthyas the death of an animal in the local zoo.Rats take over humanhousing in the ghettos, and we are amused by the phantasy prob-lems of Snoopy and the Red Baron. \nThere are some touchstones of human psychology in such acommentary, just as there is some insult to individual integrity insuch realities. We prefer not to recognize that these reactions areto some extent true of all of us.It is a strange and startling phe-nomenon that we can weep and be sad so inconsistently,at timesso inappropriately, and at times so inadequately. The world inwhich the individual lives is largely structured within his ownmind. He weeps for things that make him sad,and the objectivetragedies of our times may fail to touch him.He finds humor ina situation that contains none of the characteristics of levity, butbecause it has some special meaning for him.His joy may comefrom the shouts of little children, because they are his children, while at the same moment their noise may be most annoying toothers. \nIn order to establish some foundation for the psychology ofcommunity,it is important to understand that the community inwhich an individual lives is largely structured by the past memories, the present needs, the persistent anxieties that live within the indi-vidual.The term\"community\"does not define a precise, generallyaccepted body of people. One person's community may include thesoldiers of Viet Nam,the victims and/or the perpetrators of riot, hungry children, the ghettos.Another may be more involved inthe community of movie characters or comic strips.Either one of \nthese attitudes may be a defense against the possibility of becominginvolved more directly in a real community. \nTo consider the psychology of community living with anyclarity, one must have some understanding of what is referred toas community. It is obvious that the rules of relating to a com-munity which is a figment of one's own imagination are quitedifferent than the rules of relating to the reality of other people. The
